The smaller dog, which neighbors said was a poodle, died from injuries it sustained in the attack, officials said.

The smaller dog was unleashed when it exited a building at 533 39th St., police dog.
The pit bull, which was leashed, attacked the smaller dog.
In an effort to drive the pit bull off her dog, the owner of the smaller dog stabbed the pit bull several times, according to police.
Police officers, responding to a report of a gas smell at that address, saw the scene unfolding, got out of their police cruiser and shot the pit bull three times, police said.
No charges were filed against any of the dog owners. The owner of the smaller dog was not given a citation because she was hurriedly exiting the building because she smelled gas, police said.
A problem with gas escaping at the building was not confirmed, police said.
