PENNSYLVANIA -- A Dauphin County woman was mauled by a pit bull that a state trooper had to shoot to stop the attack.
The incident happened early Wednesday afternoon at the Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area along Route 443 in Middle Paxton Township.
Police said Lynette Wilhelm, 44, was entering a hiking trail and was on the phone with her mother when the pit bull came out of the trees and attacked her.
Her mother drove to the area immediately and along the way flagged down a state trooper for help.
"The dog was biting her," Michele Davis, a state police representative, said. "The trooper proceeded to shoot the dog once. The dog did not discontinue to bite Ms. Wilhelm. He had to shoot the dog again to let go of his grip."
During the attack, the pit bull also bit Wilhelm's mother. Both women were treated for lacerations.
The dog did not have a collar.
Police are looking for the dog's owner, who could be cited and fined.
