NEW YORK -- A pit bull this morning bit a Rochester police officer in the leg on Clifford Avenue.
Rochester Police Lt. Frank Alberti said the male officer fired once at the dog as the animal was biting the officer’s leg outside a Clifford Avenue residence about 11:30 a.m.
The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
When shot, the dog let go of the officer and ran back into its owner’s house. The dog was removed from the residence by animal control, Alberti said.
Officers were on a call on an adjacent street when they heard a woman scream for help, Alberti said. Officers went to Clifford Avenue to investigate.
A pit bull ran out of a residence after a tenant opened an exterior door, according to police. A second pit bull, which was restrained by the tenant, remained inside, he said.
Officers are still searching for the woman who screamed for help, Alberti said.
They also spotted another pit bull on the second floor of an abandoned warehouse in the neighborhood. It was not clear who owned that dog.
The homeowner was cited for having an unlicensed dog, according to Rochester Police.
Officers are investigating the incident.
