UNITED KINGDOM -- Rhys Greenwood needed 90-minutes of surgery to treat his facial injuries.
His father, Simon, said his son felt too disfigured to go out.
Rhys had been shopping with his mother, Carly, and was returning to the family car when the Staffordshire bull terrier pounced.
The 11-year-old boy who was holding the dog was powerless to prevent it tearing into his face.
'Its teeth caught Rhys' nose and top lip and tore right through the bottom lip and gum. Rhys' chin was also punctured underneath,' said Mr Greenwood, 34.
He said Rhys had become very reserved following the incident in Portsmouth.
'I've seen my really happy young boy turn into a shy lad, who is now really sad. It breaks my heart. Boys would not be allowed to stand around outside a shop with a knife or a gun and they shouldn't be allowed to stand around with these dogs.'
Police are now investigating last Thursday's attack on the youngster. They have found the dog responsible and it has been put down.
