Rita Phillip, 57, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault |
George said his daughter remains scared in hospital as the woman accused of siccing a pair of pit bulls on Deanna is set to appear in court Wednesday.
“She doesn’t feel safe with anybody,” he said. “If a couple pit bulls went after you, you wouldn’t trust anybody.”
George rushed to Calgary from Saskatchewan last weekend to be with his 26-year-old daughter.
During the visit, he didn’t ask for a detailed account because he “wasn’t ready to listen to it right now.”
His daughter’s injuries, on the other hand, were tougher to avoid.
“Her ear, most of it’s gone,” George said. “Her arms are all (chewed) up. Her arms and her ear are the three major things.”
RCMP allege Deanna was mauled at Sundre Mobile Estates when the dogs’ owner ordered them to attack.
One dog was shot dead on the scene by police. The other remains in quarantine at a City of Calgary facility.
Deanna told her dad that she was hired to clean the trailer where the incident occurred. It’s unclear why she was still there at 2 a.m., he said.
It wasn’t the first time Deanna reported being bit by the same dogs.
“She phoned me about being bit in the arms,” George said. “I said ‘why don’t you go to a doctor? Get out of there.’ ”
His daughter insisted she was fine.
RCMP have also said it’s not the first time the animals have lashed out. Both dogs were given “vicious dog” status last October by town bylaw officials.
On Tuesday, lawyers began preparing an application to have the second dog destroyed.
“This is still an ongoing issue,” said Dave Dubauskas, the central Alberta town’s chief administrative officer. “We feel for the safety of the public that’s the best course.”
The animals’ owner faces a fine of up to $10,000 or a year in prison if the municipality decides to prosecute under its dog control bylaw.
Rita Phillip, 57, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and is scheduled to appear in Calgary provincial court on Wednesday.
Phillip’s first court appearance was unexpectedly delayed earlier this week when she was taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the family is waiting for the case to move forward so they can take Deanna back to Saskatchewan.
“I’m going to let the justice system look after this,” George Wolfe said.
