CALIFORNIA -- A loose Akita went after two smaller dogs in separate attacks, fatally injuring one, near Shivela Middle School on Friday morning. It ended when the attacking dog was shot, the Murrieta Police Department reported.
The Akita, which weighed approximately 150 pounds, initially attacked a Welsh Corgi as a woman was walking the dog on a leash on Skyview Ridge, Murrieta police Lt. Rob Firmes stated in the news release.
Although the woman ultimately fought off the attacking dog with an umbrella, Firmes said, the Corgi later died from its injuries.
After police officers arrived and located the dog, they notified animal control officers and began escorting children on their way to school through the area, Firmes said. He said that as officers waited for animal control to respond, the Akita roamed several blocks and attacked a second dog, a pug, near the intersection of Alicia Way and Alondra Drive. The attacking dog had the pug in its mouth when officers used a Taser to subdue the Akita, and the pug broke free, Firmes said.
He said that after the attacking dog overcame the effects of the Taser, it ran toward an officer who shot the Akita, which died at the scene. After animal control officers arrived, Firmes said, another loose Akita was located in the area, and found to belong to the same owner.
According to Firmes no people were injured in the incident.
