CONNECTICUT -- Two months after officials seized more than 40 animals from her property, a 46-year-old woman is facing criminal charges for cruelty to animals.
An arrest warrant for Karen Desrosiers was issued on April 5, state police said. Desrosiers turned herself in to Troop A on Wednesday.
She is charged with 41 counts of cruelty to animals, state police said.
In February, state and local officials seized four dogs, one cat, 18 chickens, six turkeys, six guinea fowl, one goat, one pig, one donkey, one horse and two miniature horses from Desrosier's Condon Road residence.
A statement from the state Department of Agriculture said the animals lacked basic veterinary care, proper feed and water.
The dogs and cats were taken to local municipal animal shelters, while the horses, livestock and poultry were taken to an animal rescue facility in East Lyme, the statement said.
Desrosiers was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Derby on May 6, state police said.
