Should Animal Services be on the hook for stray dog attack?

FLORIDA -- Quetcy Marquez is nursing her little dog, Daisy, back to health after what she calls a vicious attack at her Lehigh Acres home.

"It was horrible, seeing her in that dog's mouth, getting tossed around," said Marquez.

She called Animal Services when two stray dogs showed up to her house. She says they asked her to contain the dogs until an officer could get there but three hours later, still no sign of Animal Services.

When Marquez and her roommate went to check on the dogs, one attacked them and Daisy. Now Marquez thinks Animal Services should pay for any medical expenses they may need.

After hearing the story, Brittany posting to Facebook, "They shouldn't pay for any damages. That was YOUR choice."

Lee County Domestic Animal Services responded saying, "It's protocol to ask a caller to contain a dog if they feel comfortable doing so and since this was originally a stray dog report it wasn't as high of a priority."

Sarah wrote, "If they are going to ask people to hold onto animals they should go over a list of do's and don'ts. It's their job to handle strays...they should pay."

Trish said, "My dog would be restrained before I'd venture out. They need to take responsibility."

Taylor posted, "It shouldn't have taken over 3 hours for them to show up."

Animal services did agree to examine and potentially treat Daisy. A spokeswoman also said rabies shots may not be necessary because they are optimistic the stray dog will be found.

The attacking dog is described as a tall, golden Labrador - Pit bull mix last seen in Lehigh Acres. If you see the dog, you are asked to call Animal Services at 239-LEE-PETS.
