UNITED KINGDOM -- ISPCA Inspector Michael Keane recently responded to a call surrounding a concern for a miniature pony in county Laois.
Upon arrival at the scene Inspector Keane viewed the pony and found a blue rope wrapped tightly around its neck that was cutting into the skin and causing a wound around the mane area of the neck.
Inspector Keane checked the pony for a microchip and unfortunately there was none detected. Local enquiries were made but, to date, all efforts to identify an owner have been unsuccessful. It is thought that he had been dumped in the area.
The pony, a four year old stallion named Tiny Tim by rescuers, was removed with the assistance of the local GardaĆ and brought to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre for veterinary treatment.
The injury to Tiny Tim’s neck has responded well to treatment but he also has other health problems.
His is somewhat malformed with extremely short legs and has problems with his joints. A period of veterinary evaluation will be required to determine whether Tiny Tim can live a quality life free from pain.
“Tiny Tim’s future is not certain” said Inspector Keane, “but at least he is now in the best possible place to ensure that he can get any treatment that may help. His problems are congenital and most likely a result of indiscriminate breeding”.
