OHIO -- Around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, police were notified of a cage containing 10 kittens that was found next to a dumpster behind a downtown business at 142 S. Canal St.
Officer Chuck Kassinger said police are seeking information about who abandoned the cats, leaving them without food or water. They could face charges of animal cruelty or neglect.
“Before it would be very difficult to determine who the owner was, but now, with social media, somebody might recognize these cats,” he said.
Upon learning of the kittens, Massillon resident Corri Setvin sprung into action by taking in the cats while they wait for new homes.
“I felt really bad for them,” Setvin said. “I just wanted to help out.”
Setvin said she has a cat and dog, and her daughter has always wanted more kittens. She doesn’t plan to keep any of the kittens.
Two of the kittens have already been adopted, she said.
Setvin said the remaining eight kittens, which she estimates are about six months old, are litter-trained and very friendly.
“They are so sweet,” she said. “They are running around and doing their thing.”
While she has no medical training, Setvin said the cats appear to be in good health and they are eating. She doesn’t think they are all from the same litter.
The lot of kittens include an orange cat, a black cat and gray tabbies, she said.
Kassinger reminds pet owners who need to find a new home for their pet to call the Humane Society or another animal organization to seek advice. He also suggests posting on social media that you are looking for a new home for your pets.
Anyone with information or who would like to adopt a cat should call the police department at 330-854-2211.
