KANSAS -- Wichita police say a suspect being held in connection with a shooting is also tied to a recent video of animal abuse that went viral on social media.
The video shows a 16-week-old kitten being thrown against the wall, which we will not show, began making the rounds several days ago after it was sent to a number of people via social media Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter.
The disturbing video shows a cat being thrown against a wall inside of a house two times. The cat responds with noises clearly showing it is in pain. At one point there is a title that reads, “I hate cats I kiled Damions dog”.
The Snapchat user is bree_lee22. After some digging, it would appear the account belongs to a Bree Lee. Lee’s Facebook profile shows she is in a relationship with a Damion Looney, which matches with the title description of, “I killed Damions dog”.
Wichita police were notified, and received numerous calls from across the country.
Once officers began investigating, they soon learned the suspect involved was tied to a shooting that happened late last week.
Police say it began as a dispute between a man and his girlfriend at an Old Town nightclub Thursday night. When they were asked to leave the club, they returned to their home in the 300 block of North Elizabeth.
Later, police say the woman called friends to protect her from her boyfriend. As one arrived around 2 a.m. Friday, police say the suspect fired a shot through the door, hitting a 24-year-old man in the head.
The video is truly horrific. He picks up the cat and throws it at the wall. The cat cries out and runs around, dragging its hind legs, trying to find somewhere to hide, and drags itself under a bicycle to get away from him.
He was rushed to an area hospital in serious condition, but his current condition is unknown.
Jail records indicate Damion Looney, 28, was arrested Friday afternoon and booked on numerous charges including attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and criminal possession of a firearm. Formal charges have not yet been filed, but he could face additional counts involving animal cruelty.
Police believe the kitten, that was owned by the woman, was thrown against the wall at some point after the couple left the nightclub. The kitten was taken in for treatment, but had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.
The case remains under investigation.
