MASSACHUSETTS -- Selectmen declared at a public hearing this week that a dog owned by a Rehoboth family is "dangerous" under Massachusetts law.
The dog, a Boxer / Labrador Retriever mix, owned by Dorothy Eleuterio, attacked the owner's landlord in June.
The ruling requires that the dog, named Ezy, must be confined indoors, and if outdoors, must be confined in a locked pen or dog run with a secure roof.
The incident occurred at 470 Winthrop St., where Eleuterio and her family rent an apartment.
According to the owner of the property, Isidro Bairos, he entered the backyard, and the dog broke from its tether and attacked him, knocking him down.
Bairos said he was bitten on the chest, and needed seven stitches.
Animal Control Officer Jane Foster put the dog on a 10-day quarantine in case of rabies and a 60-day restraining order so the dog wouldn't run loose.
"The dog is very protective of its owner, and I think it will hurt somebody if it's off leash," Foster said.
Eleuterio said the dog is not vicious, and has never attacked anyone before the incident in June. She does have signs on the property to beware of the dog.
Eleuterio said the dog often spends time with her granddaughter.
Bairos said he doesn't like the dog and doesn't want it on his property. He is concerned that it could hurt the other tenants, who are afraid to use the backyard.
"If it happened to me, it could happen to anybody," Bairos said.
