WASHINGTON -- A Spanaway woman who allowed her great Dane to starve to death was ordered to pay a $2,400 fine, but escaped jail time.
The News Tribune reports that the Pierce County Superior Court judge issued the ruling against Melissa Ramos on Wednesday.
Ramos is also prohibited by state law from ever owning a dog again.
She pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty. She admitted in a plea agreement that she underfed her 2-year-old dog, Zeus, and that he died as a result. It occurred during "tough financial times".
Ramos insisted the dog had previously been sick and SAYS she spent $2,000 on vet bills during a period when her husband was unemployed. The dog starved after that.
A veterinarian reported concerns about 2-year-old Zeus’ weight to animal control officers in January, and Ramos failed to get the dog sufficient treatment, according to charging papers.
“He had the defendant sign a form declining treatment against medical advice,” according to charging papers.
An animal control officer who visited Zeus in his cage described his condition as “terrible,” and noted he was lethargic and depressed.
Ramos allegedly agreed to take Zeus for further treatment and seemed more concerned about a leg injury than the dog’s weight, prosecutors said.
Although Ramos agreed to seek further treatment for Zeus, prosecutors say she never did.
She brought the dog to a clinic Jan. 28 after he died, at a weight of 55 pounds, the court records state, and was willing to pay $125 to have him cremated. Adult male Great Danes normally weigh 135 to 170 pounds.
If she had the money to PAY TO HAVE HIM CREMATED, why didn't she buy him some food?!!
Defense attorney Thomas Balerud urged Judge Vicki Hogan to accept Swaim’s recommendation, pointing out his client has five children and is truly remorseful for what happened to Zeus.
Um, he's PAID to say she's remorseful. I'd love to see how many meals this POS can skip before she begs for food, saying she's 'starving'. Ooh, she was 'depressed'. I'm sorry, but many, many people suffer depression and they DON'T starve their pets to death.
