ARIZONA -- Maricopa County authorities say a deputy shot a pit bull at a Mesa home after the animal charged toward officers.
The incident happened Saturday morning near Ellsworth Road and University Drive.
Sheriff's deputies say they were preparing to serve a search warrant at the home.
They say they were asking a woman in the driveway if anyone was inside when the pit bull went past a screen door.
Deputies say they were on the sidewalk when the dog advanced toward them.
A deputy shot the animal fearing for officers' safety.
Authorities say the dog suffered a wound in the cheek but is expected to recover.
