Darrin Pickard was sentenced to 60 days and jail and two years probation earlier this year after police seized 29 dogs and three horses from the Manistee County property he shared with his wife.
The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to abandonment/cruelty of one to three animals.
Pickard, who is not allowed to own or possess animals on probation, is now charged with animal abandonment/cruelty out of Traverse City, court records show. UpNorthLive.com reports he's accused of leaving a puppy in a hot car on a 74-degree day in May.
Police responded to a report of a dog in distress and found a 10-week-old Doberman Pinscher puppy in a crate in the car in the parking lot of Munson Medical Center.
“It was alleged that the dog was left in the vehicle, unattended, for approximately four hours,” said Traverse City police Capt. Kevin Dunklow.
The car’s windows were open about three inches on the sunny, 74-degree afternoon, Dunklow said. The dog in a crate and didn’t have access to the bowl of water in the car.
“The puppy appeared to be in distress,” Dunklow said.
The puppy was turned over to relatives, UpNorthLive reported.
Pickard previously pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty involving two or more animals on Jan. 27 in 85th District Court, in Manistee County.
Pickard's wife, Brittanie Wiggins Pickard (Brittanie Pickard), 24, is charged with abandonment/cruelty of 10 or more animals for the Manistee County case. She is set to go to trial in July.
The animals seized from the home required immediate medical care. The dogs were later put up for adoption.
Pickard is free on personal recognizance bond. His wife posted 10 percent of a $5,000 bond.
