NEVADA -- Two Elko residents were arrested on child neglect charges after officers found evidence not conducive to an environment with children, which included human and animal feces.
Police were called by a third party to a residence on Stitzel Road concerning a woman — identified as Brandy N. McKenna, 24 — supposedly being held at the residence against her will by John P. Tognacci, 28.
McKenna reportedly returned to the residence to retrieve the children, said Lt. Ty Trouten. She may have also been there to discuss relationship issues with Tognacci.
When McKenna tried to leave with the sleeping children, Tognacci allegedly tried to stop her and even took her phone.
Tognacci denied the events when authorities arrived and began to tell police how McKenna is not taking care of the children. This included a photograph of a child in a onesie soaked in urine from mid-leg to mid-chest, Tognacci claiming the children aren’t being fed, and him having to stop her from throttling one of them, said Trouten.
McKenna has a 4-year-old and an 18-month-old.
Officers noted a strong smell of dog feces in the residence. Upon inspection it looked like dogs had defecated in the house, it was not cleaned up and had dried on the carpet.
Additionally, the toilet was broken and filled with human feces. There was a chemical stain on the carpet, pointing to one of the children playing with the cleaning product Comet.
McKenna was intercepted by Elko County Sheriff’s deputies and arrested at 440 Corral Lane.
Tognacci was arrested at the residence at 1258 Stitzel Road.
Both were charged with two counts of child abuse or neglect and their bail was listed at $200,000 each.
The Department of Child and Family Services was contacted.
