A warrant was issued by the Palestine Police Department Wednesday for 20-year-old Perla Miranda Fernandez, of Athens, Texas. The warrant was obtained from information received in this case. Fernandez was arrested Thursday morning by the Athens Police Department.
Earlier this week, Palestine Police officers responded to the 700 block of South Street after a report of a group of six individuals who set fire to a puppy.
The puppy, “Remi,” was transported to a veterinary clinic in hopes of saving her. Despite the best efforts of those involved, Remi passed away due to the severity of wounds she sustained from the burning.
Other suspects are being sought in relation to this case. The case has been pursued as a “cruelty to animals” investigation, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years confinement and a fine of up to $10,000. Palestine Police investigators are actively pursuing several leads. This incident is still under active investigation.
