Virginia: Waynesboro man Roger Lee Bryant, 73, charged with animal cruelty

VIRGINIA -- A Waynesboro man has been charged with 20 offenses related to the neglect of chickens he kept at his home, according to Waynesboro police.

The more than 100 affected chickens had to be euthanized after police and the Virginia Department of Agriculture investigated.

Roger Lee Bryant, 73, of Waynesboro, was arrested on Thursday on charges of cruelty to animals and care of companion animals. The latter charge under the Virginia Code is brought when minimum care of animals is not being met, such as basic water and food needs. Bryant was released on bond.

Capt. Kelly Walker of the Waynesboro Police Department said a city animal control officer went to Bryant's residence in the 1400 block of Shenandoah Avenue on June 20. The officer went to the residence after police received a call expressing concern about the care of the chickens.

Once police investigated, Walker said a veterinarian from the Virginia Department of Agriculture was called to assist. The affected animals were removed over a three-day period in late June, Walker said.

"It was determined that the chickens had parasites and were shedding,'' Walker said.

He said the birds were kept in an enclosure at Bryant's residence.

The chickens were euthanized because of the risk of infection to other animals. "This was done because of the illnesses they had acquired and the shedding all over the place. It was completely unsanitary,'' Walker said.
