Washington: Trial against Robert Leatherman, 52, and Jeffrey Gavin, 45, in Case of Abused Dog in Bucoda Postponed Until August

WASHINGTON -- For the seventh time, the trials of two defendants in an animal cruelty case have been postponed, this time until Aug. 8.

The trials center around an allegedly abused dog in Bucoda named Wolfy.

Robert Leatherman, 52, and Jeffrey Gavin, 45, both of Bucoda, were charged in April 2015 with first-degree animal cruelty and second-degree animal cruelty, respectively. Both defendants entered not guilty pleas in May 2015.

The dog was shot multiple times after photos of the animal circulated on social media in October 2014.

A necropsy determined the dog was a case of extreme animal cruelty and suffered long-standing neglect. It revealed the dog has several maggot-infested wounds, and rocks were found in his stomach, an indication of starvation.

Vicky Smith, who performed the necropsy on Wolfy, said evidence of old metallic fragments were found in the animal’s hind end and a BB was lodged in his chest.

The report showed the animal did not die immediately afterward, and hemorrhaging showed his death was a slow and painful one.

“In my professional opinion, this patient suffered tremendously from chronic severe skin, oral, joint and ear disease as well as neglect and starvation in life, and also likely suffered painfully in death,” Smith said in documents obtained by The Chronicle through a public records request.

Leatherman owned the dog, and Gavin was responsible for shooting the animal.
