Ohio: After mauling a Dachshund, pit bull is pepper sprayed, tased and finally shot to death by police to stop attack on little dog

OHIO -- Piqua police officers were forced to shoot an aggressive pit bull during an incident on West North Street on Friday.

Officers were called to a disturbance in the 1100 block of West North Street shortly before 2 p.m. It was determined that juveniles were involved and that dogs were barking. Little more was known initially.

Police arrived and found that a pit bull had allegedly attacked a neighbor’s dachshund. The oldest juvenile on the scene was reportedly 14 years old. As he was talking with officers, the pit bull got away from him and aggressively attacked the dachshund again.

Officers tased the pit bull, which went down, but immediately got back to its feet and resumed the attack. The taser was deployed two additional times, still having no effect on the attacking dog. Pepper spray was also used in an attempt to stop the dog.

Finally, one of the officers was forced to shoot the pit bull. One shot was fired, hitting the animal in the head. The dog died instantly.

There were no adults at home, so the juveniles were taken to a neighbor across the street as police conducted their investigation.

The dachshund apparently belongs to an upstairs tenant at the property. It was bleeding profusely [by the neck - typical death grip] and Miami County Animal Control was contacted to take the small dog to a veterinarian. Its condition is unknown.

Lt. Bill Weaver said that, at this time, no charges will be filed against the pit bull’s owner. The animal was licensed; however, the owner will most likely be financially responsible for injuries to the neighbor’s dachshund.

Weaver said that a bystander at the scene was charged with disorderly conduct.
