The dog bit 6-year-old Jessica Robinson in the neck and head Wednesday evening. The girl's injuries were so serious that she had to be flown from Russellville in Brown County to the hospital.
"From what we understand, the bite came within just centimeters of hitting a major artery in her neck. There was some significant blood loss," Russellville Police Chief Matt Wertz said.
Police said the dog was on a chain and the child got too close to it.
Jessica's mother said the dog had her daughter on the ground, bit her in the head and neck.
Then, a 13-year-old boy came to Jessica's rescue by hitting the dog with a bat.
"The officer that arrived on scene could tell right away that she was going in to shock and that she needed medical assistance as soon as possible," Wertz said.
On Thursday, Wertz, along with Jessica's kindergarten teacher and principal at Russellville Elementary, delivered hand-made get well cards from her classmates. They were filled with colorful hearts, rainbows, flowers and well wishes.
"We wanted to make sure that the family was OK, that she was OK, to let them know that we're thinking about them, and the community is thinking about them," Wertz said.
Jessica's mother she is upset that the dog wasn't taken from the owner.
