It happened around 6 p.m. Thursday at a home 1146 Kalamazoo Avenue in Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said the baby girl, Susannah Jean Murray, was left alone in a glider — similar to a bouncer — while several adults were on the porch.
One of the adults went to check on the infant after about five minutes and noticed she had been bitten, Dixon said.
A Pit Bull was standing near the child with blood around its mouth, detectives said. Two other dogs were also in the house but not nearby, according to Dixon. He said the three dogs — all Pit Bulls — were not confined to an area in the house.
According to the Detroit Free Press, a neighbor said the baby's mother, Michelle Murray, had been breeding pit bull puppies.
Other than some puppies from a litter posted from last summer, I didn't see anything else. She may have bred the dogs a couple times for extra money but I didn't find anything that showed she was churning out puppies one litter after another.
But still...Shelters are full of pit bulls and pit bull mixes and people are just grabbing random pit bulls and breeding them to make a couple thousand on the puppies. Plus, I remember reading that Detroit has like 50,000 stray, abandoned dogs running loose...
If the attack happened at 6pm, why weren't the police notified until 8 hours later?
An autopsy showed the baby girl’s injuries were consistent with a dog bite.
“This is a very, very tragic situation,” Dixon said.
During a news conference Friday afternoon, he reminded people not to leave children unattended around dogs or cats.
“Always keep a watchful eye on vulnerable youth and that’s what makes this difficult to report on.”
“Just the breed of a Pit Bull by itself is not enough to condemn it. Any dog can bite,” Dixon said.
Sgt. Dixon is an apologist.
Some who live in the neighborhood say the three pit bulls were a dangerous nuisance. “Yea, cause they are so mean and vicious,” explained Akilah Gordon.
Hawa Abdi added, “I’d be scared because when the dogs get out the fence they used to chase us.”
Police said no one has been charged in the case but officers will sit down with the prosecutor’s office to determine if charges should be filed.
Officers are not releasing names of the infant or those involved in the case at this time.
The dogs were taken to Kent County Animal Shelter, where they are under quarantine.

The "mother" Michelle Murray exploited her children by photographing this infant in pit bull propaganda photos and big surprise her 3 week old was mauled killed by her pit bull. Who couldn't see that one coming? When can we stop pretending these events are accidental and unforeseeable events? I would lay odds she took out insurance on all her children. She post sentimental memes hinting for sympathy she doesn't deserve, and acts like she "lost" the baby to SIDs and dares to count herself with real mothers whose babies have died due to no fault of their own. She should be thrown in prison.
