Minnesota: Ten-year-old girl at friend's house for sleepover is attacked by family's pit bull

MINNESOTA -- On Wednesday, May 31st, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a call from Samantha VanWert in Brandon MN stating she was en route to the Douglas County Hospital with a 10 year old girl that was attacked by VanWert's pit bull.

The 10 year old was at the VanWert home and was planning a sleep over with the VanWert children.

Police say at some point during the night the pit bull, in an unprovoked attack, lunged at the girl and bit her numerous times while in the kitchen area of the home.

VanWert was eventually able to get the dog off the girl and put it in the garage.

The girl was initially treated at the Douglas County Hospital but was later transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital.

VanWert asked for the dog to be removed from the home by police. As part of the investigation the dog's body will undergo testing for rabies.

The victim's name is being withheld at this time until all family members have been notified. This case remains under investigation.
