New York: Mike Lyon Jr, 33, Accused of Shooting Horse

NEW YORK -- A Town of Erin man is facing animal cruelty charges, after allegedly shooting a horse in the hindquarters with a pellet rifle this past July.

Michael Lyon Jr., 33, is accused of shooting the horse in its right hindquarter in July 2017, causing injury to the animal, according to an indictment released Thursday by the Chemung County District Attorney's Office.

Lyon "willfully or unjustifiably" shot the horse, the indictment says.

The horse belonged to a couple in Erin, not the defendant.

The indictment was handed up by a grand jury Oct. 5 and charges Lyon with felony counts of interference with or injury to certain domestic animals, along with overdriving, torturing and injuring animals. Both are crimes under New York State's Agriculture and Markets Law.

Lyon is scheduled to face further proceedings in Chemung County Court.
