Woman charged after dead dog, starving dog found at home

NEW YORK -- A Whitesboro woman has been charged with failing to provide for her pet and living with her children in a house filled with mold.

Police were first alerted to the home of Adicia Dawson at 4 Dewey Ave. earlier this month, where they discovered a dog carcass on Dawson’s property, police said. At the time, Dawson was told to dispose of the dog’s body.

[Um, I have a problem right here. Police find a dead dog on the property and all they do is tell her to get rid of it and walk away??? Did they even investigate to see what killed the dog? Was it without food/water? Was it a skeleton? I may be wrong, but sounds like lazy police work.]

Several weeks later, police responded to Dawson’s home again on June 12 to investigate an animal cruelty complaint, they said.

When they arrived on scene, police said they spoke with Adicia Dawson of the residence, asking if she possessed and owned a dog. She said yes and brought the dog, a German Shepherd, out for police to look at. According to police, the dog was extremely malnourished and not taken care of and Animal Control was called.

Animal Control took the dog to the New Hartford Animal Hospital where it is being treated.
The dog is still alive, but not doing well, police said.

Whitesboro Police said that officers also found a dead dog carcass in the shed in the backyard of the house that had been there for approximately three months.

The Village of Whitesboro Codes Office responded to the scene and declared the house inhabitable due to large amounts of garbage and mold inside the house.

Authorities said Dawson lives at the house with her two children, ages 10 and 14. Oneida County Child Protective Services assisted at the scene and Whitesboro Police charged Dawson with endangering the welfare of a child, failing to provide proper sustenance to the animals and improper disposal of a dead animal.

Dawson is scheduled to appear at the Village of Whitesboro Court at a later date.
