Asheville man faces animal cruelty charges

NORTH CAROLINA -- A city man is facing multiple animal cruelty charges in connection with an investigation that began in October.

Shannon Lee Fox, 20, was charged Tuesday with eight counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to warrants at the Buncombe County magistrate’s office.

Fox is accused of “depriving sustenance” to a boxer, Lab mix and Chihuahua/Yorkie mix at his home on Whispering Pines Drive, off Sweeten Creek Road, according to warrants.

In October, officers with the Asheville Police Department’s animal services unit seized seven malnourished dogs and found one dead at the Whispering Pines Drive mobile home.

Neighbors said the animals appeared to have been abandoned by the owners, who had not been seen at the home in several weeks.

Officers began their investigation after receiving a report of “emaciated dogs running at large from the premises,” police Sgt. Dave Romick said.

When officers went to the home, they found some dogs outside and could hear several more dogs inside the home. Police obtained a search warrant and entered the home.

Fox was released on a written promise to appear in court.
