Colorado: Heartbreaking photo shows a dying cat holding his owners' hands on their final car ride together to the vet

COLORADO -- A cat owner has posted a heartbreaking photo of his dying pet's last day.

Reddit user abernha3 uploaded a picture to the site a fortnight ago, showing the last car ride he took to the vet.

In the photo the sick cat appears to hold hands with his owner as they travel together for the final time.

The cat, named Little Andrew, is a grey feline with golden eyes, and his owner said that he had gotten old.

'He held our hands on his last trip to the vet. Little Andrew was much stronger than his mom and I,' abernha3 captioned the photo.

The man, who appears to be from Colorado, tagged the post to flag it was about 'mourning/loss'.

The post attracted more than 280 comments from fellow cat lovers, many sharing their own stories of losing their cats. Others shared their condolences with the owner.

One wrote: 'It's amazing how they can tell when that final vet trip comes. Mine knew and was at peace about it, like yours was.'

Another said: 'I lost my baby, a Russian Blue two years ago. He looked just like your kitty. He was with me for 18 years. There's a special love there that you cannot explain. My wholehearted condolences.'

One user, called Repoj, said: 'I just found out today that I have to put my old man kitty down! This hit me hard and I feel your hurt my friend. He was a stray that was severely starving and abused when we found him. We named him "Scooty". We would roll around on our bed and pull himself along our blankets. My heart is broken and I hope Scooty and Andrew can play together when he crosses the rainbow!'

Another commented: 'That is so beautiful. It made me cry.'

'I'm so sorry for your loss... it's easy to see just from that one picture how much you loved him, and I'm sure he knew', one wrote.

The owner then provided some more information about his beloved pet.

'Little Andrew was my junior,' abernha3 wrote. 'He was 15 and a half and loved everyone.
'[He] got old and sick over the last year. He purred every day of his life and when he lost that, I knew it was time. Always sad to lose a friend. Sorry for everybody else's loses as well.'
