SOUTH AFRICA -- A three-year-old girl died and her six-year-old brother was seriously injured when they were attacked by a family dog in Locke Place in Mayville, Durban, on Saturday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

“Just before 5pm Rescue Care paramedics raced to the scene in Mayville,” Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said.

“On arrival they found a three-year-old child who had sustained critical injuries. Immediately advanced life support paramedics worked on the child. However, the child was in cardiac arrest.

“After 40 minutes of resuscitation efforts the child was unfortunately declared deceased on the scene. Her six-year-old brother, who was also attacked, was rushed to a nearby hospital before paramedics arrived. He had sustained serious injuries.”

The South African Police Service and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were on the scene and  put the dog down. They did not specify the breed of the dog.
