CALIFORNIA -- A police dog injured bitten by a pit bull this weekend while officers served an arrest warrant at an East County address is recovering, officers said Sunday.
Police were searching property and serving the warrant as part of a special-investigations unit operation in Oakley linked to a fatal weekend shooting, Concord police reported.
In a Facebook post, police said the pit bull broke loose from a collar and charged officers and the K-9 unit, named Hancock, before biting him on the leg and clamping onto his neck. An officer then shot the pit bull to save Hancock and protect people at the scene. Police later reached out to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office to handle the pit bull’s body.
“It’s unfortunate that that happened,” Concord police Lt. James Nakayama said. “We have to protect our police K-9s and officers as well.
Hancock was taken to a local veterinarian hospital for emergency treatment and is recuperating. The dog is 3½ years old and began serving in March, Nakayama said.
