The 19-year-old victim told Deputy Matthew Cory the man who assaulted her was staying at the hotel in room 129 at the Marathon hotel. The room was registered to Robert Meadows, 35, of Spring Lake, North Carolina.
She said Meadows walked into the lobby about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday and threw a $20 bill at her, telling her it was "because she was beautiful." She said Meadows later told her to come to his room with him because he gave her $20. She refused.
The victim told Deputy Corey she is terrified of dogs and was very frightened by this statement.
She said Meadows told her he was in the military and has killed people. He then left the lobby and went to his room.
He returned a short time later with his dog. When the Pit Bull jumped up on the front desk with its front paws, the victim ran into the office, locked the door and called 911.
Meadows followed her with his dog and began pounding on the office door.
Meadows returned to his room after the woman yelled at him through the locked door that she had called police and that they were on their way.
When Deputy Cory found the woman, she was still in the office, shaking and frightened by the incident. Deputy Cory said Meadows appeared to be intoxicated and claimed not to remember what happened.
Sure he "claims" not to remember.. that he was hitting on a girl nearly half his age and barely out of high school, who was alone working the front desk by herself, who was terrified of dogs and was tormented by him telling her he's killed people and would bring his pit bull to attack her.
He needs to be charged with something more serious than misdemeanors. Maybe the military can punish him more harshly. He's an embarrassment to the service men and women who proudly serve and protect us with honor.
Meadows was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disturbing the peace and simple assault.
The Florida Keys SPCA was called to take the dog for safekeeping while Meadows was in jail.
