New Hampshire: Dog shot and killed at rest stop by owner of smaller dog after attack

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- On June 28 a man shot and killed a dog at the Hooksett Rest Area on I-93 to stop it as it attacked his own dog in the parking lot near the entrance of the NH General Store.

The incident began just after 1 p.m. when a large mixed-breed dog managed to break free from its owners through an open window of their parked car, upon seeing a much smaller dog pass by on foot with its owners.

Witnesses said the man killed the attacking dog by firing a single shot at it at close range after multiple attempts to free his much smaller dog from the larger dog’s jaws were unsuccessful.

The smaller dog sustained injuries from the attack that did not appear to be life threatening, and the dog was taken to a Concord area veterinarian for treatment.

Police say the man who fired the weapon was licensed to carry the gun.

The incident is still under investigation as a reckless conduct incident, although preliminary investigation suggests firing of the weapon was justified.

Police did not release the names of the parties involved.
