Ohio: Ryan Pierce charged with felony animal cruelty after shooting his own dog

OHIO -- A Farmdale man who reportedly shot himself and his dog in an attempted suicide is now charged under a new felony animal-abuse law.

Ryan Matthew Pierce, 43, of Greenville Road, is charged with prohibitions involving companion animals and having weapons while intoxicated. He was arrested Monday but not yet arraigned.

He was taken from his home for treatment May 27 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after police learned Pierce had shot himself in the lower face and was threatening to kill family members and “everyone else around him.”

Police found him bleeding and apparently heavily under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

His wife said Pierce called her to say he had “shot the dog and myself.” She found him and the dog on a cushion in the living room.

As of June 3, the dog was still alive, having undergone surgery for a gunshot to the neck, Trumbull County deputies said.

  2. Does it even matter to anyone that he tried to kill himself!? I mean seriously people! Yes it's bad what he did to the dog, but since when dies an animals life mean more than a human being? Really?! It's really sad that he tried to kill himself also, not just the dog!

    1. Good Lord, of course it matters. I don't think anywhere in the article or arrest details does it say "He deserves to die for what he did". He needs help. But he also needs to accept responsibility for what he did - that's one of the first steps to recovery.
