West Virginia: Missy Rucker, accused of running puppy mill, charged with 47 counts of animal cruelty

WEST VIRGINIA -- A Kanawha County woman accused of running a puppy mill has been charged with more than three dozen counts of animal cruelty.

Melissa “Missy” Jo Rucker, 49, of Nitro, was charged with 47 counts of animal cruelty Friday night, according to a criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court.

The complaint said on May 9, a warrant was executed at Four Paws Pet Salon in Scott Depot, which was owned and operated by Rucker, because of a report of suspected animal neglect. The complaint said the Putnam County Humane Office had received several complaints that Rucker was operating a puppy mill where she sold dogs that were ill and required medical treatment.

According to the complaint, during the search, the only employee working at the time told officers where the kennels were located but said she was not permitted to see them.

There were 28 kennels and most of them had four dogs in them, according to the complaint. Only five of the 28 kennels had food for the dogs, and that food had mold growing on it. The complaint said the water that was available for the dogs was dirty and contained fecal matter.

According to investigating officers, the kennels contained a male and female dog and the kennels with four dogs contained one male and three females. There was also a dry-erase board on the wall with a breeding schedule for the dogs.

The complaint said several of the dogs were in poor health. Some were missing teeth, which made it difficult for them to eat. Several of the dogs were missing hair and had inflammation of the skin.

Several of the dogs also had feces dried in their fur and were emaciated, according to the complaint.

When officers searched for medication or medical records they found no records and just nine capsules used for skin conditions.

Due to the lack of medical care, nutritious food and fresh water that was being provided, the complaint said officers seized 58 dogs and six puppies from the Putnam County location.

The day after the dogs were seized, a veterinarian at the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association found that 48 percent of the dogs were dehydrated, 17 percent were severely dehydrated and 48 percent had body condition sores, according to the complaint.

When questioned, the complaint said Rucker told police that she used a veterinarian in Hurricane. However, that vet told police Rucker had only taken nine dogs into his office in April to have blood drawn for Brucellosis testing.

Rucker is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on $25,000 bond.

Indiana: Reward offered after Pit Bulls run up onto porch, grab disabled cat and maul it to death

INDIANA -- A Terre Haute couple is offering a reward to the person who locates two pit bulls which attacked and killed their cat recently.

Philip Deckert and Jennifer Thomas captured video of two dogs who grabbed their disabled rescue cat from the front steps of their home in the 1500 block of Spruce Street.

On the video, the dogs can be seen pulling on the cat, who struggles to get away. The cat was later found dead near the house.

Deckert is offering a $200 reward for information about the dogs, which he said also threatened him on his porch while they were running loose.  Deckert told the Tribune-Star he used a baseball bat to scare away the two dogs, who he fears could attack someone.

Officer Laurie Tharp of city code enforcement said the two dogs are being sought.

“We were all over the neighborhood this morning looking for these dogs,” Tharp said, noting that a dog owner down the street was recently cited for allowing dogs to run loose. However, those dogs did not match the description of the dogs seen in Deckert’s video.

Tharp said dogs on the loose can travel far, so the two dogs in the video may not be from the Spruce Street neighborhood.

“I have every intention of picking these dogs up if we find them running loose,” Tharp said. “They will be taken to the shelter, and if no one claims them, we will probably destroy them.”

Deckert and Thomas said the cat was defending another disabled cat who was being harassed by the dogs. The couple did not see the attack.

They were away from home, and later noticed their male cat “Sweetie” was missing. They reviewed surveillance video and saw the attack occurred on May 24. They later found the missing cat, who came to them with an injured back leg and walked with a limp.

By reviewing the video, Thomas said, she could see the dogs approach the house and go after another disabled cat named Precious. That is when Sweetie jumped into action to scare away the dogs.

“Sweetie was gonna put up a fight,” Thomas said.

The video shows Sweetie trying to get back to the safety of the porch, and that is when one of the dogs grabs him, and they both start pulling on him.

“He died a hero,” Thomas said of the feline’s effort to save Precious.

Deckert and Thomas have other cats who occasionally go out of the house onto the couple’s front porch. Now, the couple has put some chairs onto the porch so the cats can seek shelter under them in case the dogs return.

The couple said they have taken in strays through the years, but can adopt no more animals due to space. Now, they catch strays and have them spayed or neutered, then release the cats back in the neighborhood.

Thomas said she fears the two dogs will return, and they could possibly attack the child she babysits or other elderly people in the neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the dogs is asked to call code enforcement by dialing 311 or the city police non-emergency number at 812-238-1661.

Colorado: Animal Control officer helps woman fix her fence after he responded to a call about her dog getting out and running loose

COLORADO -- Denver Police Department posted on Facebook  May 30, 2017 ·

TIP OF THE HAT TUESDAY: DAS OFC. MARTINEZ

Today, we at the Denver Police Department are tipping our hats to Animal Protection Officer Martinez of the Denver Animal Shelter.

Back in April, Officer Martinez responded to a report of a loose dog and was able to track down its owner.

The owner, an elderly woman, explained that her pup kept getting loose because her fence was broken. The woman also relayed that she paid someone to fix it, but they took her money without fulfilling their end of the transaction.

Officer Martinez inspected the fence and realized it only needed some minor repairs. So, the officer went out and bought the supplies needed to fix the fence, then he returned to do the labor himself.

Thanks to Officer Martinez, who went above and beyond the call of duty, the woman’s pup is now safe and secure in the yard.

We’re paws-itive Officer Martinez is a swell guy! Hats tipped…

California: Four-year-old girl mauled by her family's Pit Bull

CALIFORNIA -- A 4-year-old Lake Isabella girl is getting better at Valley Children's Hospital after being mauled by the family dog.

Natalee Spears' surgeon called her injuries some of the worst she's seen in 14 years at the hospital.

Natalee is healing faster than anyone imagined, and she could be going home soon.

On the morning of May 20, Natalee had just finished breakfast when Browser, the family pit bull, attacked.

Her stepmother, Tammy Hughes, was in the room.

"I pried his mouth open and was hitting him in the face, trying to get him off of her," Hughes said. "Got him off. He got loose again from me."

Hughes got her out of the room and away from the dog. She said Natlee's face was barely hanging on. Seconds later, she was shocked to see Natalee's resiliency.

"I was scared, holding her," Hughes said. "You don't know it's gonna get fixed, and then she started singing 'You Are My Sunshine' with me."

Natalee was rushed to a Bakersfield hospital, but doctors said she needed a higher level care, so she was airlifted to Valley Children's.

She underwent six hours of surgery to re-attach her face, repair nerve damage, reconstruct her nose and fix her jaw that was broken on both sides.

Fast forward 17 days and Natalee is making plans like any 4-year-old.

"I have an ice cream party," she said.

She's also well aware of her injuries.

"I got a hole, I gotta a hole in my neck," the little girl said.

While Natalee recuperates, Valley Children's is also reintroducing her to animals. The lesson is to teach Natalee that dogs are friendly but to be gentle.

Her surgeon, Dr. Angela Rodriguez, dropped by to check on Natalee.

"We have to see the response of the facial nerve, but thankfully in that area it branches really nicely and it can recover especially in a child as young as Natalee," the doctor said.

Natalee hopes to check out of the hospital Friday.

Rodriguez said Natalee may need more surgeries, but it depends on her recovery in the next six months.

China: Man's Golden Retriever beaten, tortured and abused by China Eastern Airlines staff

CHINA -- These shocking images show the injuries sustained after a dog was allegedly manhandled by airport staff.

The Golden Retriever, who was taking a flight home with its owner, suffered serious injuries after reportedly escaping from its cage.

What did they do to his eyes???

It is believed ‘excessive force’ was used on the dog by airport staff.

The 23-year-old owner of the animal said his dog Er Mao had severe injuries to its eyes and body when he was handed to him by staff at Tianhe International Airport in Wuhan, capital of Central China’s Hubei Province.

The dog had been placed inside a cage in the cargo hold of the China Eastern Airlines flight from Shanghai, although it’s said to have escaped and bolted across the tarmac.

Were they stabbing him? Tasing him? WTH?!

According to a statement by the airport, flight MU 2544 was delayed and eight staff members spent over 40 minutes chasing and restraining the runaway pet before putting it back in its cage.

After the flight landed in Wuhan, the owner said he had to wait over an hour to be given his dog, and only then was he informed that Er Mao had somehow managed to escape the cargo hold.

Photo taken before he was tortured and abused

The airport CLAIMED their staff had to react to the ’emergency situation’ in order to avoid damage and injuries to assets and passengers, apologizing to the owner for the incident that has grabbed headlines nationwide.

But the owner, who said his pet was still receiving emergency treatment at an animal hospital, is demanding a better explanation and may seek damages from the airport as well as the airlines.

Further investigation is now under way to determine who will take the blame for the dog’s escape and injuries.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to both Tianhe International Airport and China Eastern Airlines about the allegations.

Note: China does not have ANY animal cruelty laws; they can basically do whatever they want to animals without repercussion.

Mississippi: Georgia Chatman, 29, arrested as part of a dog fighting ring, say police

MISSISSIPPI -- The Adams County Sheriff’s Department has arrested another person in connection with an alleged dog fighting ring.

Deputies arrested Georgia Ivrione Chatman Monday. She is charged with cruelty to animals in connection with the incident that led to the arrest of Charoyd Boyd on May 11.

Note: In original article, he was identified as Charoyd Bell who ran a pit bull breeding business with his wife Molly Bell called Square Bkisnis Kennels.

Authorities said on May 11, they received several calls about dog fighting that was happening at 507 Lasalle Street in the Natchez city limits.

When deputies arrived, they said they heard distressful yelps and howls coming from the bayou next to the residence.

As they approached the residence, Georgia Chatman made contact with the deputies and was later arrested on an active warrant that she had with the Natchez Police Department.

Deputies continued to follow the sounds and discovered it was coming from dogs.

As they entered the bayou, the deputies observed two black males in the area where the howls were coming from. One of the males was holding a pit bull on a leash which was facing another pit bull that was wearing a harness tethered to a tree. A third pit bull was also running loose in the area unrestrained.

The male holding the pit bull on the leash was identified as Charoyd Bell and the other male, who was sitting on the ground, was identified as Damien Green.

The dog on the leash had severe scarring on its face, head, and body, along with swelling and fresh cuts. It was also bleeding and its tongue had been partially bitten off.

Both subjects were then escorted out of the bayou, and Charoyd Bell was placed under arrest for Felony Cruelty to Animals- Dog fights.

More than a dozen dogs were rescued, some of which were in very poor condition.  Authorities said the dogs from this incident appear to be doing fine.
