Alabama: Former animal shelter director Bobbie Taylor found guilty of animal cruelty

ALABAMA -- Lawrence County District Judge Angela Terry today found former animal service director Bobbie Taylor guilty of second-degree animal cruelty, the first step in Taylor's effort to have the case decided by a Circuit Court jury.

Terry sentenced Taylor to 30 days in Lawrence County jail, which is suspended pending payment of restitution. The defendant was also fined $250 in crime victim compensation fees and $100 in bail bond fees.

Taylor was facing 17 misdemeanor counts of animal abuse and neglect charges stemming from an investigation by the Moulton Police Department and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in June 2015.

During a bench trial May 25, Taylor’s attorney Tony Hughes was able to get two charges dropped because of vagueness. He said at the time Taylor was stipulating to the other charges so she could appeal the case to the Lawrence County Circuit Court, where she has a right to a trial by jury. Taylor has 14 days to file an appeal.

Taylor had sheltered the county strays at her home on Lawrence County 170 since 1999. In August 2013, she was paid $15 per animal by the County Commission.

Commissioners terminated an $80,000 annual contract with Taylor after the Moulton Police Department received an abuse complaint in June. Along with the help of the ASPCA, officers searched Taylor's property. They said they found about 300 animals suffering from various illnesses in filthy conditions.

Taylor has denied all claims and pleaded not guilty to all 17 counts against her during an arraignment in the fall.

Hughes previously said it could take several months for a Circuit Court jury trial to begin.
