Alabama: Former animal shelter director Bobbie Taylor's cruelty case will go to jury trial

ALABAMA -- Two charges of animal cruelty were dropped against former Lawrence County animal shelter director Bobbie Taylor Wednesday, bringing the total number of charges against her down to 15.

Taylor's attorney also filed a motion in Lawrence County District Court Wednesday morning to take her trial to a jury. The judge granted the motion.

A trial date has not been set.

Taylor, 82, was charged with multiple misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in July 2015 after authorities shut down the no-kill shelter she was operating on her land in Lawrence County.

Taylor had an $80,000 yearly contract with the Lawrence County Commission to run the shelter.

After a volunteer recorded video of the animals' living conditions at the shelter in June 2015, Moulton authorities searched the property. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed 300 dogs and cats from the shelter.

Police said several animals died during the removal.

Taylor has maintained her innocence. Her attorney, Tony Hughes, said he will file a motion to have Moulton police's search warrant thrown out.
