TEXAS -- An Austin police officer shot and killed a dog in self defense this weekend.
Officers were called to investigate an aggressive pan handler Saturday night. When the officers got to the scene, the dog attacked one of the officers. The attack happened in Central Austin outside a convenient store at the intersection of North Loop Boulevard and Avenue F.
According the the police, the dog went up to one of the officers, sniffed him, and then licked the back of his hand. The officer looked for the aggressive pan handler, and did not find him. The officer then saw the dog was in the middle of the street. The dog had a leash, and when the officer reached for it, the dog attacked and bit the officer.
"He just wanted to make sure the dog was away from the traffic, away from all the other people walking in the area and transport the dog to the animal shelter when they dog turned on him," said Wuthipong Tantaksinanukij with the Austin Police Department.
The officer attacked received treatment for his injury. Police said he has dealt with dogs many times in the past, taking them to the animal shelter.
