ORIGINAL STORY MAY 19, 2014
Knoxville woman says former roommate hung her dog over fence
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- From the looks of it now, you'd never know 5-month-old Bella's life was almost cut short earlier this month.

When Zoe Link couldn't find her playful pup, she knew something was wrong.

“I hollered for her because I didn't see her sitting by the door like she usually does and right about then, I saw something out of the corner of my eye and I heard a big thud,” Link says.

That thud, Link says was the sound of Bella hitting the fence.

"Her eyes were bulging out of her head, she couldn't move her mouth, breathe, nothing,” says Link.

As Bella hung there like a rag doll, Link quickly tried to help her dog.

"I was trying my hardest to get what I saw was noose off of her neck, got that off, ran across the street and at that time we called the police,” Link says.

Link not only couldn't believe her eyes, but she also couldn't believe what her roommate, Tyler John Pattinson told her.

"T.J. came up and let me know he had tried to kill my dog."

According to Link, this wasn't the first time a threat had been made.

"Easter Sunday we had been in Florida and we had to find somewhere for her to stay because he had threatened to skin her alive,” Link tells Local 8.

Bella did have some torn tendons and ligaments near her throat and neck area, but she is expected to be okay.

Link has moved out of the house where the incident happened.

Pattinson has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Kansas: Michael Kewley, who has a history of torturing and killing dogs, was given diversion after beating and killing his 10-week-old puppy in 2015. Police have found another dead dog, strangled to death with a leash, on his property

KANSAS -- When Michael Kewley surrendered himself to officers, police say they found several loose rounds of .45-caliber ammunition in his pocket.

Across the street, Kewley's neighbor found another bullet on his kitchen floor and several bullet holes in his home.

Lawrence police officers were familiar with Kewley, according to a recently released arrest affidavit. They were aware that he is a veteran who reportedly served time in special forces and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, night terrors and blackouts.

The affidavit — a document that explains the reasons for an arrest — offers new details in the case of an armed standoff between police and Kewley that lasted several hours on Lawrence's southwest side and resulted in a number of felony charges. Allegations in an affidavit still must be proved in a court of law.

Currently Kewley is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $50,000 bond and is awaiting a hearing later this month.

Kewley served multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, said one person who asked not to be named but said she lived with him. The woman also said Kewley is under care of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and recently experienced the deaths of two close friends, which caused him to become suicidal, the Journal-World previously reported.

And if officers weren't aware before, they were told on April 4 of Kewley's distrust of law enforcement, the affidavit says.

That morning, around 7:15 a.m. officers were dispatched to Kewley's home at 2525 Scottsdale St. to check on Kewley, who was reportedly threatening to commit suicide.

One woman who met Kewley on a dating website called police, the affidavit says. She told them she woke up that morning to a text message from Kewley that said "I'm sorry dear I'm gonna have to do something very dumb and regretful. And please leave poppy flowers at my grave at Arlington."

That same morning, an officer was sent to the home across the street from Kewley's, the affidavit said. There, one man said he awoke around 3:15 a.m. to the sound of a gunshot. Looking outside after hearing the noise, the man said he saw a motion sensor light was on at Kewley's home.

The man told police he was familiar with guns and "was certain he had a bullet hole in the front of his house," as well as "what he believed to be a pistol round on the floor of his kitchen," the affidavit says.

Considering the situation, officers contacted one of Kewley's ex-girlfriends, who arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, the affidavit says. The night before she told police she found Kewley drinking alcohol in his garage and called his probation officer.

Kewley was on probation from a 2015 criminal restraint conviction. That same year criminal threat, criminal restraint and cruelty to animals charges were filed against him after he beat and tortured a 10-week-old puppy to death.

However, Kewley was granted diversion in the animal cruelty/torture case, meaning after a period of time, possibly a year, it was erased from his record as though he had never grabbed that little puppy and brutalized it until finally killing it.

Had they even ordered mental health counseling/treatment? Did they bother to ban him from being around animals? If the animal cruelty case was already dismissed off his record, that means they only gave him a year for torturing and beating this puppy to death.

Around 9:15 a.m. the woman who originally called police, called again, saying she was on her way and told officers Kewley said he "would have a gun and knives on him 'for protection from the police,'" the affidavit says.

In addition she warned police the home's front door might be rigged with explosives. She described police as a "trigger" subject for Kewley because he "believes the police are against him."

Soon police spoke with Kewley over the phone and asked him to come outside, the affidavit says.

As police spoke with Kewley he left the home several times, wearing a ballistic vest and appearing to "assess the location and position of police personnel surrounding his residence," the affidavit says.

That day police said they were concerned Kewley was armed with a "long gun." Dozens of officers responded to the scene, some in their personal vehicles, some in marked cars.

Ultimately, no "long gun" was found in the home.

Several streets in the area were blocked off as more and more officers arrived on the scene. One area resident who lives nearby said she heard around seven gunshots fired the night before.

Officers patrolled the neighborhood with rifles and both Sunflower Elementary and Southwest Middle schools were placed on lockdown.

Officers told Kewley to raise his hands and walk toward them multiple times, but he would not, the affidavit says. At one point Kewley threw a propane tank out his front door, which officers believed was either an explosive device or something he might shoot to cause an explosion.

Later, Kewley removed his ballistic vest, though he was concealing a knife behind his back and challenging officers to come to him, the affidavit says.

Refusing to drop the knife, Kewley "retreated into the house and said, "I guess we'll just have a gun fight," the affidavit says.

Around 2:43 p.m., Kewley surrendered to officers and was arrested without further incident, the affidavit says.

Searching his home, officers found one handgun, a ballistic vest with a large kitchen knife inside a pouch and a number of magazines loaded with dozens of handgun and rifle rounds, the affidavit says.

Officers found one dog inside the home and a dead dog inside a recycling bin outside the garage with "a leash secured tightly around its neck."

One of Kewley's male roommates later told police the dead dog belonged to Kewley and that the dog had been alive the night before, the affidavit says.

Why was he even allowed to be around animals??? This dog's torture and death is 100% the fault of the prosecutor's who failed to protect it. How many other animals - kittens, puppies, turtles, raccoons, birds - has he tortured and killed??

A second male roommate said Kewley fired a number of gunshots that night.

This spring, that second roommate told police, Kewley had started doing drugs, behaving aggressively and speaking about his time in the Army, the affidavit says.

He said he originally woke up to a single gunshot and asked Kewley, who was drinking whiskey, to "knock it off," the affidavit says.

Kewley apologized and the second roommate went back to bed, only to wake up once more to the sounds of a dog "yelping real bad."

Again, that roommate said he approached Kewley, who spoke of killing one of his two dogs, the affidavit says.

The second conversation took place around 2:30 a.m. and Kewley was reportedly acting paranoid at the time.

That roommate told police he stayed with Kewley, who fired his handgun a number of times throughout the rest of the morning, the affidavit says. Eventually, after one gunshot, the electricity in the garage, where they were, went out.

"(The roommate) assumed a bullet hit electrical wiring in the wall," the affidavit says.

When asked why he didn't call police, that roommate said when he left for work that morning Kewley was "passed out 'face down' on the kitchen table," and he "hoped Kewley would sleep it off, and be himself by the time he returned home from work," the affidavit says. He added that he planned on contacting police at some point because Kewley "needs help."

HISTORY OF TORTURING DOGS, SAYS ROOMMATE

Previously that roommate had told police he saw Kewley abusing dogs, the affidavit says.

Once he reportedly strung a dog up by the neck over a cross bar and a second time he hung a dog by a heavy bag stand, according to the affidavit, though Kewley maintained he was "just training" the dogs.

Several days after the standoff, another neighborhood resident called police after finding a bullet hole in his home, the affidavit says.

Kewley is scheduled to appear in court on May 31 for a preliminary hearing, where he and his attorney, Adam Hall, will have a chance to respond to the allegations. During that hearing a judge will determine if enough evidence exists to order Kewley to stand trial.

Alongside charges stemming from the standoff, Kewley is accused of violating his probation, and his diversion agreement from his second case in 2015 has been revoked.

Florida: This is what happens when you give David Rivera, who hanged his mother's Chihuahua to death, probation. Good job, Florida!

FLORIDA -- The headless animals found in a recycling bin in DeBary were part of a cleansing ritual, according to a Volusia sheriff’s report.

Probation Officer Justine Matherly told deputies she’d gone to 90 Dirksen Drive to check on her probationer, David Rivera, on the evening of May 16 when she noticed blood on Rivera’s head, according to the report.

Rivera, 25, claimed a "cleansing ritual" was taking place.

Sitting around the headless animals, which included birds, a goat and a turtle, were members of Rivera’s family who told Matherly they were performing a ritual abuse and torture of animals to cleanse Rivera of the schizophrenic thoughts he’d been having, according to the report.

The animal remains were found in a recycling bin on Toms Road by a bicyclist the morning after the ritual, according to the report. The incident remains under investigation.

Rivera was sentenced in November to five years of probation for felony animal cruelty, records show.

In April 2016, he was in an eight-hour standoff with deputies after he hanged his mother’s dog then threatened to hang himself.

Events began after Rivera, 24, was arguing with his mother at her home at 90 Dirksen Drive over his unemployment, according to the sheriff's report.

VIDEO NEWS CLIP:

That's when he dragged a 5-year-old Chihuahua named Benji out to the tree in his mother's backyard and dropped it from a limb with a metal chain around its neck, the report states, hanging it to death.

But then events took another turn and David, a former Deltona High School student, climbed 30 feet into the oak tree, tied a metal cable around his neck, swung the other end around a limb and threatened to jump, deputies said.

Too bad he didn't.

The 49-year-old mother of five sons immediately called 9-1-1.

"I have an emergency in my house. My son is crazy. He killed one of the dogs," cried Belica Rivera in the call as she tried to get emergency services to come out to her home, just across the street from Gemini Springs Dog Park.

Belica Rivera said she was urging her son to make money to help support two children he fathered — a son who lives with his mom in Indiana and a daughter who lives with her mother in Deltona.

Texas: Anthony Wills, 48, hanged his dog by its leash/collar, kicked it several times, threw it onto the ground and stomped on it repeatedly

TEXAS -- A Wichita Falls man has been charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals for reportedly mistreating a dog.

Anthony Tyrone Wills, 48, remained in Wichita County Jail Wednesday afternoon in lieu of $2,500.

According to a probable cause affidavit:

Around 8:24 p.m. on May 2, officers were sent to an apartment complex in the 500 block of Kemp Boulevard for a disturbance. When they arrived, multiple subjects were outside involved in a fight that began over the mistreatment of a dog.

After about 15-20 people were separated, officers began to interview the various individuals. One witness said she first heard the terrier mix belonging to Wills yelping in pain, so she went outside to see what was happening.

She then saw Wills holding the dog up in the air about a foot off the ground by a leash attached to its collar and kicking the dog several times. She then saw him throw the dog on the porch and stomp on it.

An officer went to check on the dog and found it lying on its left side favoring its right rear leg, which appeared to be broken or displaced around the hip. The dog would not let anyone near him and would continue to yelp in pain or growl if officers got close.

Animal control was contacted and responded to the scene. They discovered it had severe abdominal injuries, possibly internal injuries and a broken right leg.

Wills told officers he was angry because the dog had had an accident inside the apartment (because Wills was too lazy to take the dog out to use the bathroom. Look at him. That POS probably doesn't make it much farther than from the fridge to the sofa  in a day let alone take his dog out for a walk around the apartment complex.)

For some reason, officers decided on-scene that there was "no saving" the dog and made the decision that they would take it to the shelter and euthanize it. Why wasn't a licensed vet the person to make that decision?? Bad cop and bad shelter tags until I hear more. Why didn't they try to save this dog?

Wills was arrested for felony animal cruelty to a non-livestock animal and is currently being held in the Wichita County Jail. His bond has been set at $2,500.

West Virginia: Brothers Jacob Ryan and Dalton Ryan admitted to police that they took a dog out to the woods and hanged it to death. Then for fun, they bragged about their horrific crime on Snapchat

WEST VIRGINIA -- Two teenagers have been arrested after posting a picture of a hanging dog on Snapchat

▲ Jacob Ryan and Dalton Ryan are facing charges for hanging the dog

▲ The picture was posted to Jacob Ryan’s Snapchat with the caption “Hanging with my dawg”

▲ The teens are allegedly facing lenient punishment for the crime

Two teenagers in West Virginia have been arrested after they hanged (strangled to death) a dog and posted the picture to Snapchat.

The story is raising anger around the country as the two teenagers will be allegedly receiving just a slap on the wrist for the heinous crime.

Jacob and Dalton Ryan posted a picture to Jacob’s Snapchat of the dog hanging with a caption that read, “Hanging with my dawg.”

According to the information posted online, Jacob Ryan lives in Alum Creek, West Virginia and is enrolled at the Scott High School. If you scroll through his profile, you will notice he is a proud member of the high school’s football team, wearing number 62.

The killer’s friends rushed to show their appreciation, claiming his actions were very amusing and entertaining. However, things quickly turned sour as a wave of critics poured in, which eventually led to the photo being taken down shortly afterwards.

When questioned, the teens showed no remorse about what he had done and readily admitted what they'd done to the poor dog.

The two teenagers were arrested, but as a shock to everyone, the two may be facing lenient punishments.

According to Trooper Sergeant Fox, the teens claimed that “it was a stray dog who was sickly, and they say believed it was going to die.”

A source close to the incident claims that the dog allegedly belonged to the grandmother, who asked the boys to take the dog out to a field and shoot it due to illness.

Allegedly this is playing a part in the decision to give the teens a more lenient punishment.

TDH has not verified these claims at this time.

A Petition For Justice

There is now a petition demanding that Jacob, and Dalton receive a harsh punishment for their crime. The fact that the boys would post such a disturbing action on social media with a caption that is clearly mocking the situation goes to show how twisted this action truly was.

The petition is directed towards Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Gabehart, and reads as follows:

"Dear Mr. Gabehart,
A couple of juveniles admitted to police that they hanged and killed a stray dog. Police say the juveniles thought that the dog was sickly and they believed it was going to die, but that should be no excuse for their gruesome crime.

Additionally, the two posted photos of the horrific scene on social media, as if they were proud of what they’d done.

If authorities allow these juveniles to get away with a gruesome act of animal cruelty, there’s a high possibility that these people will continue to kill innocent creatures.

That is why we’re calling on you to ensure that the suspects are harshly punished so that no more innocent animals are killed."

Mississippi: Investigators asking for help after dog found strangled to death in Covington County

MISSISSIPPI -- The Covington County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help in finding the person or persons who hung a dead dog from a tree on Oil Well Road.

An investigator told WDAM 7 they received the initial report of the deceased dog Saturday.  - but they didn't bother to show up at the scene where the dog's body was lying. The next day the Sheriff's Office still didn't think it was important enough of a call to bother responding to. Finally, two days later - and only AFTER a 2nd complaint came in saying someone had now hanged the dead dog's body from a tree - did a deputy finally got around to driving out there...

A deputy met Greg Mcarney, the man who found the dog, at the site just down the road for the Three Notch Road and Oil Well Road intersection.

The investigator said they took a cable that was around the dog's neck as evidence.

Seven on Your Side spoke with Greg Mcraney after he got a call early Saturday morning about a dead dog on the side of Oil Well Road.

"They said they saw a dog that appeared to have a cable around it's neck," said Mcraney.  "I drove over and found the dog, it was laying beside the road."

Mcraney said the dog had a "really tight" speaker-wire tied around its neck.  He also said the dog had open wounds on one side of its body that looked like the dog had been drug on the road.

"Pretty upset and disgusted by it," said Mcraney.  "I would like to see someone get charged for things like this."

SHERIFF'S OFFICE DIDN'T BOTHER TO RESPOND TO A CALL ABOUT A DOG BEING TORTURED AND DRAGGED TO DEATH AND LYING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD UNTIL 2 DAYS LATER -

AND THEY ONLY RESPONDED IN PERSON AFTER SOMEONE ELSE CALLED TO SAY THE DEAD DOG WAS NOW HANGING FROM A TREE

A deputy with the Covington County Sheriff's Office returned to the scene Monday, after another report that someone had tied a yellow rope around the same dog and hung it from a tree.

An investigator said they have been unsuccessful in finding the animal's owner and do not know if it was a pet or a stray.  Investigators are actively interviewing neighbors to try to track down the person responsible.

"Cruelty is definitely an issue in our area. From seeing dogs tied outside with no shelter, to fighting dogs," said Mcraney.  "Dogs out on the side of the road is a pretty common occurrence. I see that everyday going back and forth to work."

Under current Mississippi law, neglecting an animal has a maximum punishment of up to a $1000 fine and six months in jail.

Mcraney said he doesn't think people are scared of getting in trouble for abusing animals.  "People are not scared, people are not reporting it and things aren't getting done," said Mcraney.

If you have any information about this incident that could lead to an arrest, please contact the Covington County Sheriff's Office at (601)765-8281.

Animal cruelty will not be a priority until law enforcement makes it one. Remember when police refused to get involved in domestic abuse complaints, telling wives, "Well you married him!"? It wasn't until law enforcement was FORCED to begin doing reports and offering victims help- did law enforcement finally take it seriously.

Australia: Cat hung by neck, breaks leg to escape

AUSTRALIA -- Hung by his neck and left to die, a Bundaberg cat was forced to break his own leg to free himself.

The horrific case of animal cruelty brought a seasoned animal rescuer to tears as she struggled to understand why anyone would do such a thing.

Best Friends Felines owner Nikki Chapple has seen her fair share of animal cruelty but even she was left dumbfounded by this latest act of animal abuse.

Mrs Chapple said she was alerted to the black cat's ordeal by Red Collar Rescue owner Sharyn Banks who posted it on an online animal rescue forum asking if anybody could help.

"I said yep. I knew it was $1,000 but it just broke my heart to hear what he'd been through," Mrs Chapple said.

According to Mrs Chapple, the 18-month-old domestic short hair cat was cared for at a Bundaberg pound before the pound's vet, along with Northside Vet Care, determined the best course of action was to amputate the cat's front left leg.

He arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday night and as soon as Mrs Chapple saw him she cried.

"The skin was gone from around his neck," Mrs Chapple said.

"It looked like your typical collar injury but thinner so it must have been a tiny piece of rope."

Mrs Chapple said the cat had no use of his front left leg and was dragging it beneath him.

"He had worn away the hair around his paws, it was bloody, and underneath his leg was an ulcerated sore."

The cat was named Odyssey after the epic journey it had endured and Mrs Chapple said the evidence strongly indicated this was done on purpose.

"Someone's deliberately done this or another suggestion was a dog fighting ring used him as bait," she said.

Odyssey's amputation was performed successfully yesterday. Now he must adapt to life with only three legs.

"When it's one leg the animal can adapt pretty quickly," Mrs Chapple said. "He was already hopping about and he had good balance this morning."

But if Odyssey's journey is to have a happy ending he will have to overcome another potential obstacle.

"Because he's a black cat they are traditionally harder to adopt because of a stupid superstition," Mrs Chapple said.

"Thankfully we've had three people already say they want to adopt him. Hopefully we'll find a perfect match for him and he'll never endure anything like this again."

Oregon: Glenn Lacoss, 56, who purposely strangled and hanged his neighbor's cat named Sweetie, gets an updated mugshot

OREGON -- Back in April 2016, Glenn Lacoss was charged with animal cruelty after his neighbor found her beloved cat named Sweetie hanging from a fence.

Police were called to the home and said they arrested Glenn William Lacoss, 55,  after he told them he killed the cat because it was scratching his trees.

Investigators said Lacoss told police he was upset there were feral cats in his backyard.

Her owner believes Lacoss beat the cat and then hanged her from the fence, letting her strangle to death.

According to the DA’s office, markings on the fence show Sweetie struggled before she died a horrific, slow death.

Records show that Lacoss was to appear in court on January 23, 2017 for "Hearing-Sentencing". My bet is they gave him probation with no jail time.

United Kingdom: Kieran Milledge, 22, will spend just 5 weeks in jail for torturing his pit bull, named Ronnie, to death

UNITED KINGDOM -- A man whose dog died days after he beat and threw it around a train carriage has been jailed.

Kieran Milledge, 22, was caught on CCTV attacking his Staffordshire pit bull terrier on a train between Braintree and Witham, Essex, in October.

He was seen abusing the animal in what Chelmsford Magistrates' Court heard was a "continued and brutal attack".

Milledge, of no fixed address (aka homeless), admitted animal cruelty and possession of a bladed weapon.

He was jailed for 21 weeks for the animal cruelty offence and, to be served concurrently, eight weeks for breaching a suspended sentence order and six months for the weapon offense.

The attack on his dog, called Ronnie, happened over a 20 minute period, the court heard.

Milledge hung the dog by its lead and then swung him against the wall of the train before pushing his foot against his pet's face.

During the 20-minute attack, Ronnie appeared to lose consciousness and defecated on the seat. He died three days later, the court was told.

Milledge said he had been so drunk that he could not remember what happened.
Sgt Steven Maguire, of British Transport Police, said: "I welcome today's sentence as it has taken a violent dog abuser off the streets.

"Milledge's cruel beating of his dog was simply inexcusable and I am pleased that he now has an indefinite ban from keeping animals."

Injustice in Florida: Monieram Rathibhan, 59, pleads guilty to horrific animal cruelty at illegal slaughterhouse. Gets just 90 days house arrest, 3 years probation

FLORIDA -- Instead of jurors watching undercover videos of goats and other farm animals being illegally slaughtered, the charges against a rancher ended in a plea deal Wednesday.

Now all eight men arrested in law enforcement raids of three Loxahatchee farms Oct. 13 have had their cases resolved, pleasing a Miami animal rights group that secretly recorded the videos.

Only one man took his case to a jury, resulting in convictions and a one-year jail sentence. The rest took plea offers from the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office.

The final deal was for Monieram Rathibhan, 59, owner of Medina Farms. With his trial scheduled to begin Monday, he pleaded guilty to five animal cruelty charges, including three felonies.

Circuit Judge Krista Marx should not have accepted this deal
Circuit Judge Krista Marx sentenced Rathibhan to three years of probation, including 90 days in Palm Beach County Jail that could be converted to house arrest.

"You shall not possess farm animals of any kind," Marx told the longtime farmer, noting that the restrictions include "horses, cattle, cows, goats, pigs and ducks."

Rathibhan also is banned from participating in any animal slaughtering operations, and his property will be subject to random inspections by deputies who work in the sheriff's agricultural crimes unit.

"Investigators have witnessed and documented extreme acts of animal cruelty such as, slitting goat's necks while they are restrained on their backs, forced to suffocate in their own blood, as well as slitting and severing the throats of cows with extremely dull blades before hoisting them by their hind legs and skinning them alive, often dragging out their death for over 20 minutes," authorities said.

Any violations could reopen the case, meaning he could face new punishments under the felonies that altogether are punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

But if Rathibhan fully complies with the terms, negotiated by prosecutor Judith Arco and defense attorney Christian Van Riper, he will not have felony convictions on his record.

As long as this POS Monieram Rathibhan doesn't get arrested in the next three years, THIS WILL ALL BE WIPED OFF HIS CRIMINAL RECORD -- AS THOUGH IT HAD NEVER HAPPENED. AS THOUGH HE HAD NEVER TORTURED AND SKINNED ALIVE AND BOILED ALIVE AND STRANGLED AND STOMPED AND HANGED ANIMALS FOR YEARS.

"I'm pleased to see he's doing some jail time with the violent crimes he committed," Animal Recovery Mission founder Richard Couto told the Sun Sentinel.

The organization has cited Rathibhan for allegedly torturing thousands of animals over three decades — "we are happy he's shut down," Couto said.

Years of community complaints about suspected animal torture prompted investigators with the animal rights group to pose as meat-seeking customers at Medina Farms, Rancho Garcia and Paso Fino G.A. Farm last summer.

A video from Aug. 22, 2015 shows a Medina Farms worker inviting one of Couto's investigators to watch the slaughter of a white goat on the property in the 2100 block of C Road. The footage shows the goat being placed on a wooden rack.

"Without rendering the goat insensitive to pain, [the worker] cuts into the goat's neck. The goat struggles and kicks violently, causing Monieram Rathibhan to grab its legs and hold it down," the arrest report states.

In a Sept. 9 video, Rathibhan is recorded shooting a black and white Holstein cow in the head with what appeared to be a .22-caliber rifle. The cow fell to its knees but didn't immediately die.

"A .22-caliber is not the appropriate caliber for a cow of its size," a veterinarian noted for investigators.

The cow struggled as Rathibhan cut its neck. As the cow kicked its legs, the worker proceeded to butcher the animal, according to the report.

Medina Farm's customers largely consisted of Muslims, "who bought animals to be slaughtered for human consumption and ritualistic sacrifice," authorities said.

In March, a jury convicted rancher Jorge Garcia (aka Jorge Luis Garcia), 48, on four misdemeanor animal cruelty charges concerning the illegal slaughter of two goats on his property, which has since been foreclosed.

Authorities said undercover ARM investigators witnessed and captured footage of Garcia and his employees "selling large amounts of horse meat, violently stabbing pigs in the heart and boiling them alive, slitting throats of goats and rams before hoisting them by their hind legs then skinning them alive, and brutally stomping on ducks, slitting their throats and drowning them in their own blood."

While sentencing Garcia, Circuit Judge Samantha Schosberg Feuer said she considered testimony about how many farm animals, not just the slaughtered goats, were "tortured, brutalized and lived in squalor."
