Illinois: Waukegan's city council doesn't care that citizens' pets are being mauled by vicious Pit Bulls

ILLINOIS -- No changes to Waukegan's animal control ordinance are on the horizon despite a review following an attack by two pit bulls that left a smaller dog with severe injuries.

That decision was disappointing to Hailey Schueneman, who has pushed for the city to tighten up its ordinance following a January attack on her grandparents' dog.

THIS IS GUS BEFORE THE PIT BULL ATTACK
THIS IS GUS AFTER THE PIT BULL ATTACK

The situation "feels so unjust," said Ald. Lisa May, 9th, whose ward includes the Schueneman's home and who also chairs the City Council's judiciary committee.

But after speaking to the city's attorney, the police chief and the sergeant who runs the animal control division, she said they reached the conclusion that the the code is sufficient.

May said she plans on setting up a meeting with Schueneman and the police chief to discuss the incident further, but at this point, she doesn't see what changes could have led to a different outcome in this case.

"Everyone feels horrible about what happened to Gus, the poor dog that got pulled from his yard," May said, referring to the Schuenemans' dog.

The incident occurred on Jan. 2 when Gus, who is owned by Greg and Jamie Schueneman, ran to the edge of their fenced yard on the city's north side, as a man who lived nearby walked past with two pit bulls on leashes.

The small dog was apparently pulled underneath the picket fence onto the sidewalk, where one of the big dogs started to maul the smaller dog, Jamie Schueneman told the News-Sun.

"My husband tried beating (the larger dog) in the head to release Gus, and my granddaughter screamed," she said. Her husband's hands were cut from trying to get the big dog to release Gus.

The dog was treated by a veterinarian in Grayslake, where he underwent surgery and was racking up medical bills of $12,000, according to a Gofundme page set up by the family.

The family has filed a civil lawsuit against the pit bulls' owner, Hailey Schueneman said.

CITY BLAMES VICTIM FOR $12,000 IN INJURIES
An investigation by the city found that the smaller dog "provoked" the Pit Bull before the attack by barking at it and running to the fence, according to police Sgt. Dennis Rosch.

The question of whether the pit bulls would be deemed dangerous came down to whether they were provoked by the smaller dog.

The city's ordinance is "very vague" in parts, said Hailey Schueneman, pointing in particular to a lack of definition for what constitutes provocation.

She said she doesn't think a dog in its own yard and with its owner present rushing to the fence should be considered provocation.

First of all, the owner is required to control their dog while leashed. The little dog was inside its own fence. Obviously the Pit Bull owner cannot control their mauler; otherwise this little dog would not have been grabbed and pulled underneath the fence.  These people are morons.

PIT BULL OWNER BLAMING VICTIM
She also disputes that the dog poked his head through the fence's slates, which she said contributed to the finding that the pit bulls were provoked.

Hailey Schueneman said after the meeting she would like the ordinance to also include more guidance about how animal control conducts its investigations, because she felt the investigation into the January attack, "was not conducted thoroughly" and relied just on the accounts of the two owners.

"I know why the dogs were found to be not dangerous, but I also feel like there has to be something more," she said.

Illinois: Havanese named Gus is pulled underneath his fence and mauled by two Pit Bulls

ILLINOIS -- On Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018, Gus experienced the greatest trauma that you could imagine. Likewise, our family has experienced every pet-owner's worst nightmare.

Gussy was attacked by two pit bulls. They dragged him out from under the fence in his own backyard.

Among his most severe injuries, Gus's jugular vein was punctured and he lost one of his eyes. He is stable now, but he is still in critical condition. Gus has already had to have emergency surgery and his veterinary care has ended up totaling over $12,000 at only two days into his treatment.

Gus will require continual care, not only to keep him alive, but also to help him through his long and difficult recovery. We, Gus's humans, love him more than we can put into words. He is such an important part of our family, and we are desperate to heal him and bring him back home.

Please, if there is anything you can do to help, it will be greatly appreciated.

Update 1
Thursday January 8, 2018
Gus had a bit of a rough night last night. The doctors said that he regurgitated a little into his NG tube and they are concerned about that. They also said that they may have to do a blood transfusion today as his numbers are not where they would like them to be. They are changing up his antibiotics and pain meds to get things under control and watching him very closely.

He has been through so much in the last couple of days, but he is fighting to get well and come back home to his family. We were able to bring him his favorite skunk toy yesterday and tell him how much we love him and miss him. He definitely perked up a little when he saw his humans! We’re hoping that today’s visit will reassure him that we are with him and that we cannot wait for him to be well enough to bring him home.

Update 2
Friday January 5, 2018
The last 24 hours Gus has proven what a strong little guy he is. All of his catheter’s and tubes have been removed, he is eating and drinking on his own and he wants to come home to his family. Grandpa, Hailey, Kameron and Brianna were able to go and visit yesterday and it really lifted Gus’s spirits, he was so happy to see his family.

The prayers from all of our family and friends over the past several days means more than you know to our family. We cannot Thank everyone enough for your generosity and kind words.

We will be able to bring Gus home later this evening and continue to care for him and make him comfortable at home, his wounds will need to be cared for and dressed and he will remain on antibiotics and pain medications.

Everyone who has cared for Gus continues to tell us what a miracle it is that he survived this vicious attack. The staff at Premier Veterinary in Grayslake will forever be our hero’s , their fast action an skilled medical care saved our little guys life.

We still have a long road ahead of us, Gus will follow up with surgeon on Monday.

Update 3
I am happy to report that Gus was well enough to come home last night. He is such a strong little guy. He is adjusting well to seeing the world with just one eye, and to be quite honest it looks like he’s always winking at us. He was so happy to be back at home with his family and his favorite things. He is still in a lot of pain and covered in stitches, but he is taking his medication and making himself comfortable.

We can’t tell you how overwhelming your generosity has been, the donations and prayers for Gus are so very appreciated.

And again to the Grayslake Premier Veterinary staff, you are our heroes! Gus is home with us because of you and your excellent care! Thank you Thank You Thank You!

Update 4
Gus went in for his follow up appointment with his surgeon, they are not happy with his chipped shoulder, it is poking through the skin and causing Gus a lot of pain. They have decided to take him back for another surgery to clean it up and try to ease his pain. Everything else seems to be healing nicely. Gus will go back for another surgery in the next few minutes and hopefully will be home with us again tomorrow.

Thank you all again for your kind words, prayers and generous donations. We know their is a long road to recovery for our poor little guy, but we also know how strong he is. We will keep you updated as we know what’s going on.

Update 5
Gus came home after yesterday’s surgery and was resting comfortably. This evening his neck incision began to show signs of infection, he is on his way back to Grayslake to be seen and treated. We will update when we have a better understanding of what is going on. Please continue to pray for Gus. Hopefully this will be a minor setback and we will be back on the road to recovery soon!

Update 6
Gus followed up with the Vet today and had his drain removed, he is getting stronger and will hopefully be able to get his stitches removed on Tuesday. It looks like what was thought to be infection is part of the healing process and nothing to worry about. He’s eating and drinking on his own and walking outside to go potty on his own. We cannot get over what a strong boy he is. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Gus!

Update 7
Gus is getting better every day, he is off a lot of the very strong medications, and his personality is getting back to normal. He is eating and drinking and begging for treats. He started to chew his favorite sticks and play with his toys. Thank you to everyone who brought over goodies for Gus, he is thoroughly enjoying everything, from the delicious food to the treats and all of the toys and blankets. The plan is for Gus to have all of his stitches removed tomorrow!!

Update 8
Gus had all of his stitches removed yesterday, he is starting to feel more like himself everyday! Today he decided he wanted to play with all of his new toys!

Gus, when he was much younger

Update 9
Gus was able to have his first bath today since the attack, he still has so many scabs everywhere from the puncture wounds so it was a very gentle bath.

His neck incision seems to be healing nicely, as well as his shoulder. The eye removal also seems to have healed up quite well, and Gus has really adjusted well to losing his eye.

He still has moments when he overdoes it a little and will let out a yelp reminding him to slow down. All of the muscle damage that he endured is going to take time to heal.

With that being said, we couldn’t be happier that he is home with us, he has been extra snuggly and really seems to be enjoying the comfort of his humans laps.

Hailey, Gus’ favorite human spoke to the Waukegan City Council to try to amend the city ordinances that allowed the dogs who did this to Gus to be labeled  dangerous! We will keep you posted on updates when we know more!

Thank you again for the generous donations, they are so helpful to our family!

Update 10
We haven’t updated in a while, because Gus has been keeping us very busy, every day his energy level increases and so does his his desire to play and cuddle with his humans. He is healing and getting back in to the swing of things.

We’ve made arrangements to have him groomed after hours while no other dogs are present to make sure that it goes smoothly, his puncture wounds have healed nicely as well as his surgical incisions, so he’s ready to get rid of his funny haircut from all of the shaving for surgery!

Again our family would like to thank you all for your very generous donations and kind words and thoughts. It’s a miracle that Gus is still here with us, and we will treasure every moment that we have with him!

Pitbulls-Just Say No - While yes everyone is happy the dog survived but with the pits still there, for how long? We all know pits, when they don't kill their intended victim, return to finish the job. Those pits should not have been allowed to return and should have been put down. This is why killers need to be put down on spot to ensure no further victims from those individual dogs.

Hailey Renee Schueneman - This is of course the thought I share as Gussy’s owner. Our city’s animal control is run by a bunch of pit bull apologists and pits are the main breed in their shelter. They found the dogs that mauled Gus to be not dangerous.

Suzanne Gilmore Taylor - So glad he is healing, poor babe. Please get yourself to your city hall at the next monthly' meeting. Put those pictures in front of the mayor face-along with a copy the vet bill Oh and police report.. And demand they do something with these pits.YOU have rights!!!

Hailey Renee Schueneman - I have taken all of these steps! I spoke at my city council meeting on the 16th and gave these photos to the mayor and to all of the aldermen, this issue is on their agenda!

Suzanne Gilmore Taylor - GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!I'm very proud of you!!!!I'm trying to do something in my town but it's a tourist town, they bring money with their dogs. But,the city and police are more aware

Louise Castello - Do the dogs still live next door? No way these animals should still be alive and the owner of the Pits would be paying medical bills.

Hailey Renee Schueneman - Owner is 23, renting an apartment with 2 roommates and is unemployed. He isn’t paying anything so we are stuck with the bill that’s over $8,000. Dogs are still alive and living a couple houses down.

Illinois: Father asks for prayers after his daughter's Havanese named Gus pulled under his fence and mauled by two Pit Bulls

ILLINOIS -- Rick Rojas posted on Facebook January 3, 2018 ·

PRAYERS FOR GUS: This is Hailey’s (my daughter) Instagram with prayer requests for her best friend and companion. This is NOT about Pitbulls. This is about my daughter’s request for prayer that her puppy survives this attack.

Hailey is in my most recent Cover Photo holding Gus during the holidays. We need a miracle. And more than anything we pray God teaches us what He wants us to learn from this terrifying incident. #HisWillBeDone

Although Rick claims "This is not about Pit Bulls" it absolutely is about Pit Bulls.

Pit Bulls are far more likely, than any other dog - even Rottweilers, Mastiffs, German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers - to do this type of damage on a regular basis to pets, livestock, children, elderly people, their owners.

This is what the Pit Bulls did to Gus:

Georgia: ICE places hold on illegal alien Fredy Dorantes Moreno after he's arrested for animal cruelty

GEORGIA -- A man could be forced to leave the country after police say he left his puppy in a hot car.

The Havanese puppy was spotted Sunday night panting in the back seat of an SUV in the parking lot of a strip mall in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

A witness said the dog had been in the SUV for at least a half-hour and was struggling.

“The external temperature outside was about 82 degrees,” Cpl. Michele Pihera, with the Gwinnett County Police Department, said. “However, when they put a thermometer inside the car, they determined the temperature inside the SUV was 94 to over 100 degrees.”

Police broke open the window and saved the dog, and they didn’t have to look far for the owner.

Police said that the dog’s owner, Freddy Dorantes (aka Fredy Dorantes-Moreno), and his family ate dinner inside the Hibachi Restaurant in a strip mall.

Officers took the puppy to a place that had some air conditioning.

“After the officer broke out the window, that's when the man came out and saw what happened to his vehicle,” Pihera said.

Dorantes was arrested for animal cruelty. He appeared in court for the first time Tuesday afternoon and was ordered to remain behind bars because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on him.

The puppy is not up for adoption at this time. The dog will be held at animal control until the court case is resolved, or the family signs papers giving up ownership.

New York: Scumbag corporate attorney Michelle Kelban-Carteron orders a 'therapy dog' certificate online and uses it to try to keep her vicious Pit Bull from being evicted from her condo. Her attorney claims (with a straight face) that it's "dog racism".

NEW YORK -- It’s the battle of the real service dog versus the fake service dog.

The board of a luxury Chelsea building is trying to evict a woman’s “vicious” pit bull after the dog savagely attacked another resident’s tiny Havanese mix named Kinje, who was praised by Katie Couric for her work with pediatric cancer patients.

But when the board of 447 W. 18th St. moved to boot the Pit Bull out of the building, her owner — corporate lawyer Michelle Kelban-Carteron — quickly secured a therapy support dog certification.

The condo board's lawsuit seeks to kick Luna out of the building "in order to protect the safety and well-being of building residents, children, passersby and other dogs," the suit says.

The Latham & Watkins LLP partner provided a letter from a doctor that says her husband Gregory Carteron had an accident in October 2015 and needs Luna to provide “emotional support.”

Oh but for the 2 years prior to this letter - which only came after she wrote a big check to this doctor - little Gregory was just fine going places without his mauler. What an embarrassing duo these two cretins make.

The condo’s bylaws specifically prohibit pit bulls, but Kelban-Carteron is trying to argue that an exception should be made for Luna because she’s a service dog.

If their bylaws prohibit Pit Bulls, why was this Pit Bull living in the building in the first place? Why did it take a vicious attack on this little dog before they did anything about it???

Herbert Cohen, a lawyer for the building, said during an emergency hearing Friday that Carteron was "service dog shopping" - pointing out that Carteron only filed a doctor's note about Luna's role as a service dog days before the building's lawsuit.

Cohen also claims the therapy dog certification provided by the Carterons' lawyers was just a sketchy document from the internet.

The board found Luna’s 11th hour certification “suspect,” and is suing Kelban-Carteron to have the pit bull ejected from the 47-unit building.

The scumbag lawyer and her husband hired attorney Adam Leitman Bailey who has the audacity to insist that the Pit Bull's troubles stem from one condo board member who's a "racist against pit bulls."

"It's dog racism," Bailey said. "What is it - like you don't like someone because of the (color of the dog's) skin?"

The Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit includes video surveillance of Luna’s May 31st attack of Kinje.

Kinje’s caretaker, Jo Lynn Sorenson, is seen walking the dog by the condo’s front entrance around 12:15 p.m. when the Pit Bull suddenly darts out the front doors.

The Pit Bull lunges at Kinje and sinks her teeth into the 8-pound dog’s face.

Meanwhile, Greg Carteron chases after his pit bull and slams Sorenson into a car as he pulls the Pit Bull off the smaller dog.

“In an instant there was a gray blur racing towards me, Kinje screamed in pain and I was thrown against a car by Gregory Carteron,” Sorenson recalls in an affidavit.

“Greg Carteron began screaming at me that ‘it wasn’t’ my dog’s fault,’ ‘these things happen, and ‘it was an accident,” Sorenson said.

“There was tremendous blood,” coming from Kinje, Sorenson says in the statement.

She rushed the pooch to a nearby vet, who administered antibiotics and treated Kinje for wounds to her head and between her ears.

The vet bill was over $1,000, according to a copy of the invoice.

Last May wasn’t the first time the Pit Bull acted aggressively toward another dog, according to court papers.

Another resident, Keith Endersen, says in a sworn statement that the pit bull “snarled and growled” at his golden retriever Hank on the building’s roof deck in September 2016.

Jeffrey Metz, another attorney for the scumbag Pit Bull owners, reiterated in court Friday that the incident with Kinje was an “accident” and the pit bull is not a vicious dog.

Really Jeff? Really? Why don't you take this Pit Bull home for the weekend and put it in a room with your children, your grandchildren and your pets and see what happens.

He agreed to keep the Pit Bull muzzled and crated while the suit is pending.

Kinje’s owner is a pediatrician named Vivian Liu. Liu has Kinje involved in a program called the Good Dog Foundation, which brings pets to New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s pediatric cancer center to cheer up sick kids.

The cream-colored Havanese, “who looks like a shih tzu,” was featured in a December 2016 feature by Couric on Yahoo! News.

Some NY POST Facebook comments

Laura Heffernan - So an unleashed dog attacks a service dog half his size and the owners scramble to get it registered as a service dog? Scumbags. Evict them and their dog. They're lucky if they don't get sued.

Greg Byron - Happens all the time. I think the only people who like pitbulls are pitbull owners. I"d only suggest they carry at least $5k of animal attack insurance, because if they don't and won't pay vet bills, they'll get 5 years probation to make monthly payments or go to jail.

Donna Kane - I don't understand why pitbull owners refuse to accept that they have a dog designed to guard, and protect (which can result in attacking). I have a doberman, who has some Schutzhund training, and you better believe I take as many precautions as possible. Main one being crossing the street, to avoid getting close enough for an altercation. She is usually friendly, but takes her job seriously. She is large, muscular, and has scissor sharp teeth for days. I respect, but more importantly acknowledge her power. A gun is dangerous in the wrong hands, but the gun never stops being a weapon no matter who's holding it.

Dash Radosti - As someone who actually has a service dog, she will lose. Stupid lawyer doesn't realize "emotional support dogs" aren't covered under ADA...must do specific task. Also, vicious service dogs can be thrown out. And judge won't look kindly on 11th hour certification..stupid.

Richie Ardisson - Most owners of Pit Bulls have a complex and they are morons...I watch them here in the Bronx and I always am weary of the morons and their dogs...I had one attack me at Orchard Beach some years ago because the two morons who were walking the dog in the parking lot had it off the leash...I was about to kill the dog when the jerks got it in control after I informed them of my intention...if your neighbor has one buy bear spray at any sporting store or carry a small revolver for protection...you are entitled to apply for a NYC handgun permit for your personal protection and no jury will find you at fault for protecting yourself or your dog...

ohammed Ahmed Muniser-saleh - These dogs are just to dangerous, one just killed a baby not to long ago. Mother just brought him home from the hospital, left him alone in the room for not even 5 minutes. Dog got up to the crip grab the baby and rip it to shreds.

Heather Masch - Perfect example of a scumbag lawyer and a scumbag dog owner. The "registry" is fake (and seems a ton of 'pibble' owners love to fake register their dogs to keep them), and ESAs and Therapy Dogs arent protected by ADA. Kick them both out. Lucky it wasn't me that dog would have its face bashed in for attacking my Service Dog.

Jan Sydnam - What a crock...he's suddenly a "service dog" This is the crap that paints attorneys with the same slimy brush. The dog IS aggressive to other dogs and should ALWAYS BE MUZZLED WHEN IN PUBLIC.

Canada: 24 dogs, 6 cats removed from accused BC puppy mill

CANADA -- Two dozen dogs and six cats were removed from a dog breeding facility near Lillooet over the weekend, the BC SPCA has confirmed.

The animals seized by BC SPCA officials were all suffering from severe neglect, the agency said Monday.

Eight of the dogs are Yorkie crosses, 15 are Havanese and Havanese-crosses and one is an emaciated Husky cross, the BC SPCA said.

"The dogs were kept in a filthy environment with high levels of ammonia from urine and have serious dental disease and badly matted fur," senior animal protection officer Kent Kokoska said.

"Some of the dogs were being kept in a chicken coop filled with chicken and dog feces, and one of the dogs and two puppies were being kept in a rodent cage."

The cats had severely matted fur and were also living in "filthy and hazardous conditions," the BC SPCA said. The area they lived in did not have proper ventilation or lighting.

And the weekend raid was not the first seizure at the remote property.

Constables seized 16 dogs and four cats earlier this month, and two cats were surrendered recently as part of the ongoing investigation. The BC SPCA said it may recommend charges of animal cruelty as a result.

All of the animals are being cared for at SPCA facilities in Kamloops and Kelowna.
