Florida: Sigman Hernandez, 40, minimizes what he did to Lily the Yorkie. She was brutally beaten, stomped on, had several broken ribs, signs of strangulation and died two days after being abandoned by Hernandez in a Publix parking garage to die

FLORIDA -- Miami Beach police say Sigman Hernandez confessed Wednesday to “slapping and possibly choking” his tiny Yorkshire Terrier and leaving her in a Publix parking garage.

The reason, he told police: The dog vomited in his car because she had gotten carsick.

Hernandez, 40, of Miami, now faces a third-degree felony animal cruelty charge, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine up to $10,000, according to state statutes. He also faces one count of animal abandonment. He was being held Wednesday night in Miami-Dade’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $6,000 bond.

On Tuesday, police released video of a “person of interest,” after a barely 8-pound dog was found next to a concrete column in the Publix garage at 1920 West Ave.

Officers took the dog, later named Lily, to Doral Centre Animal Hospital, a 24-hour emergency facility.

“When I received Lily she was motionless and lying on her left side,” Mariana Garcia wrote in her report. “Lily’s midsection also appeared swollen and distorted. Lily’s eyes were also bloodshot red and she would occasionally moan in pain.”

Lily had at least seven broken ribs and showed signs of strangulation, police said. It was highly suspected that Hernandez stomped on Lily's tiny body.

Despite round-the-clock veterinary care, she died from her injuries two days later.

Garage surveillance video showed a red Toyota Yaris with a delivery sign on the roof back into a parking space shortly before the dog was found. The video showed the man go into the elevator, go to the restroom and then return to his car.

On Wednesday afternoon, the police department tweeted they were speaking with the “person of interest” seen in the video and later announced the arrest.

Hernandez, whose occupation is listed as a delivery person, told police he took the dog out of the car and placed it on the garage floor.

“The defendant admitted to pushing his dog with his feet while the dog lay on the garage floor,” the officer wrote in Hernandez’s report. “The defendant then abandoned his dog to suffer without providing care and assistance.”

Earlier:

Florida: Badly beaten Yorkie found in Publix parking garage; she was rushed to a vet but died. Now police looking for a man in red Toyota seen on surveillance video.

FLORIDA -- A badly beaten Yorkshire Terrier that was barely breathing and was “occasionally crying out in pain,” was found discarded in a Miami Beach Publix parking garage last week by an employee, police say.

Detectives are now hoping surveillance video from the garage will help them identify a man, who may be responsible for dumping the dog, which later died from her injuries.

The dog, named Lily at the animal hospital, was found April 7 on the second floor of the Publix garage, 1920 West Ave.

A Publix employee spotted the tiny dog next to a concrete support column and a trash can between parking spaces. The employee told an off-duty officer, who was with a patrolman at the time.

That officer went to check on the dog and “could clearly see something was wrong” with the dog’s midsection, according to an incident report.

The detective then called Miami Beach police officer Mariana Garcia, who frequently handles animal abuse cases.

Garcia took the dog to Doral Centre Animal Hospital.

“When I received Lily she was motionless and lying on her left side,” Garcia wrote. “Lily’s midsection also appeared swollen and distorted. Lily’s eyes were also bloodshot red and she would occasionally moan in pain.”

Lily suffered at least seven broken ribs and had severe trauma to her neck area, Garcia wrote. Garcia said that veterinary staff believed the dog had been strangled at some point and did not show signs of being hit by a car.

Meanwhile, officers reviewed footage from security cameras and focused on a red Toyota Yaris that backed into a parking space shortly before the dog was found.

The man can be seen getting out of his car and walking on the passengers side. Police say he then reached in, got something and placed it on the floor.

The man’s actions could be seen on the footage, but the dog could not be seen. The man then walked into the elevator, went to the first floor, went straight to the men’s restroom and then headed back to the elevator to the second floor.

Police say he then walked to the passenger’s side of the car.

“It is strongly suspected that the subject may have been stomping on Lily’s body since he lingered in the spot where she was eventually found,” Garcia wrote.

Garcia said that no other vehicles or people were in the area during the time that the man entered the garage and the dog was found.

Two days after the dog was found, she died from her injuries.

“I was told by the veterinary staff that Lily’s injuries were just too severe,” Garcia wrote.

A necropsy is pending, but police are looking for help in identifying the man.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).

South Carolina: Melony Peters, 46, arrested after going grocery shopping and leaving dog and baby in hot car

SOUTH CAROLINA -- A Lugoff woman has been arrested and charged after deputies say she left a 16-month-old and dog in her car while she was grocery shopping.

Melony Peters, 46, was arrested Tuesday and charged with child neglect.

A person at the Food Lion in Lugoff called deputies at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday after seeing the child and dog inside the car unattended. When deputies arrived, they found a dog in the car, but no child.

A short time later, Sheriff James Matthews says a woman walked out of the store carrying a child "drenched in sweat." The woman told deputies she saw the child in the car and she unlocked the car and removed the infant.

Nice that the  "Good Samaritans" removed the baby from the boiling hot car, but they left the poor dog inside to die. Jerks.

Deputies located Peters inside the store and determined she was the caretaker (aka babysitter) of the child. Matthews says she told deputies she had "a lot of things going on in her mind and had forgotten the baby was in the car."

The child was turned over to the Department of Social Services and Kershaw County Special Services took custody of the dog.

“This should be a lesson to anyone, a parent or custodian of a child, that if you get caught leaving a baby, unattended in a hot car while you shop, you will go to jail,” said Matthews. “There is NO excuse for doing this. Fortunately, a concerned citizen took immediate and appropriate action to save this child.”

California: Security Guard, Charles Moore, Who Allegedly Kicked Small Dog In SF Store Charged With Animal Cruelty

CALIFORNIA -- A former San Francisco Safeway security guard accused of kicking a dog that later died after being fatally struck by a car has been arrested and is now facing animal cruelty charges.

ABC News first told you about this dog's death when it happened in March.

On Monday night, the security guard was arrested in Oakland and booked on charges of felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor battery assault on the dog's owner. "Everybody that heard the story I feel was heartbroken by it," Rosco's owner Mike Hardesty said.

Rosco was Hardesty's beloved pet.

On March 16, Charles Moore worked security at the Safeway in Potrero Center in San Francisco.

Hardesty said Moore exchanged words with him when he used his smartphone to record a scuffle between the guard and a young man accused of shoplifting.

He said Moore suddenly slapped the phone out of his hand and minutes later attacked him.

Capt. Vicky Guldbech said security cameras captured the brazen assault. "We went to his vehicle and actually changed and covered up his uniform, came up from behind the dog guardian and whacked him in the back of the head."

Guldbech said the security camera also recorded the attack on Hardesty's 11-year-old Chihuahua mix Rosco.

Moore is accused of kicking the dog twice, the second time more violently.

Hardesty described the incident when ABC7 interviewed him a day after it happened. "He kicks my dog like he was trying to win the Superbowl and Roso took off and I ran after him as fast as I could," he said.

Rosco slipped through his leash, ran into traffic and died when he was hit by a car.

Hardesty thanks animal control and police for their hard work, but justice still seems a bit hollow.

"Sometimes I open up my door and for just a few seconds, I think i'm gonna see him, hear him, you know," Hardesty said.

Moore faces fines of up to $20,000 and possible jail time.

"This man is violent to act like this with an innocent being that had nothing to do with this, this dog did not deserve this," Guldbech said.
