Father saved by son after being attacked by dogs

VIRGINIA -- Sixty-two-year-old Max Foronda is covered from head to toe with at least 14 dog bites after being attacked by his neighbor's two pit bulls.

He has trouble walking because his calf muscle was injured. Both his arms were mauled and the dogs almost bit off part of his ear.  "I thought these dogs were friendly. But them they tried to kill me." he said.

Foronda had just come home from shopping with his two youngest children when they found the dogs playing in their yard. He got out of his pick up truck to tell the dogs' owners where they were when the dogs attacked.

His oldest son, 17-year-old Alejandro Morales, heard his little sister screaming and came running to find his dad in the middle of the street being attacked by the dogs.

"They're trying to kill him," he said. "I had to do something. "

And Alejandro did what he does so well on the soccer field: He ran and the dogs chased him. By Alejandro's distracting the dogs, his dad was able to get up and run to his pick up truck. One dog was still biting him, but he managed eventually to close the door to safety.

Alejandro was able to grab his sister and run into the house.

His mom, Carmen Foronda, was overwhelmed in describing her son's bravery. "I think about what might have happened to him,"" she said.

When EMTs arrived, police say the pit bulls also began attacking them, so they ran back inside the ambulance.

When police arrived, spokesman Dustin Sternbeck says, the dogs threatened the officers as well, so they fired three to six times, killing one dog. The other ran and animal control officers caught him.

He's being kept in a cage at the animal shelter until a judge determines whether he'll be put down or be turned over to his owners.

Sternbeck said an investigation is underway to determine whether the owners will be charged.
