Animal Control finds emaciated Great Dane

GEORGIA -- A malnourished Great Dane is struggling to stay alive. The dog was found, in bad shape, in Thomas County.

Animal workers hope you can help find his owner.

This is George. The young Great Dane was found Thursday wandering near Salem Road in Pavo.

"Anybody who knows any information about this dog, if they've seen someone drop it off, if they know the owner, they know anything about this great Dane, to contact us," said Thomas County Animal Control Director Pat Smith.

When animal control found George he was suffering from heat stroke, a 106 fever, and severe malnutrition.

Smith says George weighed in Friday around 60 pounds. That's about a hundred pounds less than what he should weigh.

Smith says she is not sure if George's condition is the result of animal cruelty, abuse, or just neglect. "At this time they think the organs may be shutting down, but he's going to make it. With all the love and the care that we've got, he'll make it."

Smith says it's up to the community to notice when animals are being abused. "If you see somebody abusing an animal. You see something is just not quite right with an animal. It doesn't have any shelter. The living conditions are not right. You know you are their voice. Speak up for them."

But even though George's current condition is poor, Smith is optimistic for his future. "If he pulls through we will try to get him adopted. Get him to a loving forever home. Somebody that will take him and love him and not just put him out somewhere."

Smith says in her 11 years of animal control experience, she has never seen as many animal cruelty cases as she's seen over the last year.

If you have any information about George, you are asked to call Thomas County Animal Control at 229-228-0613.
