Chaparral boy mauled by pack of German shepherds

NEW MEXICO -- A 12-year-old boy who was walking home Sunday night from a friend's house in Chaparral was attacked by five German shepherds, according to witnesses in the area who came to the boy's rescue and called for help, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office.

The attack happened about 9 p.m. in the 700 block of Moon View Road in Chaparral. Sheriff's investigators with the Animal Cruelty Task Force say neighbors told them they heard the boy crying for help, and rushed to his aid. The boy sustained more than 50 bites to his body and was immediately taken to an El Paso-area hospital.

Investigators say the owners of the dogs were located and notified of the attack. The dogs were allegedly running loose when the attack happened. Four of the five were taken into custody and investigators say they are still looking for the fifth dog.

Charges are pending against the owner of the dogs, who investigators say has not produced any proof of vaccinations for any of the dogs.

The boy is reportedly still hospitalized and is in stable condition.
