Pit bull goes on the attack; shot by police

PENNSYLVANIA -- City police killed a pit bull that mauled another dog and was running loose around small children.

Officers responded to Bowman and Kidder streets at 10:33 a.m. Sunday on a report of a vicious dog attack. A pit bull owned by P. Doty of Kidder Street attacked a neighbor's Yorkshire terrier-poodle mix and the caller, M. Hall, was attempting to separate the two dogs using a rake.

Police said the pit bull was successfully pried away from the smaller dog, which was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment of severe injuries.

Officers checking the area saw the pit bull at Bowman and Kidder streets running aimlessly in the immediate area of a number of small children.

"It was necessary for an officer, in the interest of public safety and to prevent further injury, to utilize a department weapon and eliminate the present threat of danger," police said in a news
