Indiana: Little Border Collie mix was attacked by a pit bull at dog park

INDIANA -- Mandy Collier‎ posted on Facebook to Our Pets Were Attacked By Pit Bulls - BSL NOW on October 4, 2017 · Indianapolis, IN ·

Atticus❤️ Sleeping with Daddy.

Our precious little Border Collie mix was attacked by the dog park when an owner couldn't control his pit bull and it drug him several feet where it jumped and latched onto Atticus while his back was turned. 3 cm diameter tear on his rump and nothing more thank God.

Even worse though, the owner accused us of being extra harsh on him because it was a pit bull. Well Buddy I'm being harsh because I have an injured dog and a huge Hospital bill. NOTHING WAS DONE!

SOME COMMENTS

Diana Kassir - PLEASE go after the owner and make him pay in full. I sued the Pit owner that 'did' my sweet girl. I got notarized statements from the vets, any witnesses, TAKE PHOTOS, etc. Report to any authorities you can find. I didn't use a lawyer, and I did get my $6,000.00 in vet bills back. I also got a 'muzzle order' on the Pit.

Mahli Poole - Awesome!

Rebecca Edwards - The problem lies with the owners. They are in denial and accept no responsility for their dog's actions and their lack of inaction, somehow making themselves the victims. The breed is unpredictable and should not be allowed in dog parks, or places where people with dogs gather.... or the elderly, or children.

Mandy Collier - The dog park was our apartment dog park. Usually never anyone in it except the regulars and we kinda know each other's schedules. This man came from a house division behind the apartment complex so he WASN'T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE THERE!!! The office helped us by putting signs up as well as contacting the owners Home Owners Association

We are disappointed to have to give this announcement, however there are things to learn here.

On Friday, September 1, our baby boy Atticus was attacked by another dog while Alex was leaving the dog park. Atticus weighs about 55 pounds and was attacked by a dog twice his size and weight. Alex was able to safely remove Atticus from the dog's jaws and was luckily not hurt. Atticus was then taken to Airport Animal Emergi-Center, and were told the laceration was deep and almost 4 centimeters in diameter. He was sedated and stitched. He wasn't severely injured and healed well, thank God, however, the medical bill was nothing but small.

Even though we were distressed about Atticus and this incident, we believed in trying to handle the problem amicably. We did call Indianapolis Animal Control and reported it, and they were willing to let us talk to the owner first. Being the protective and fierce mama I am, I was able to track the owners residence in a neighboring complex, and we left a copy of the vet bill and a note saying that we would like to handle this amicably and to give us a call as soon as he could.

The owner called us a few days later saying he was out of town and it was his roommate that was walking the dog and he was extremely sorry about it and he would happily compensate us for the emergency visit bill.

Almost a week of stalling followed by several days of no contact, we decided to let Animal Control do their thing. We don't have much information now but we will update everyone about the status of the investigation as we will be receiving an update as things progress.

There's a few things we'd like to warn people about to make sure an incident as this can be addressed less stressfully:

* Find a 24 hour pet emergency hospital/center near you and put their number in your phone. This will save time on feeling rushed and trying to find something and scrambling for the address while trying to care for your baby and get them loaded up into the vehicle. This way, you have the number and address ahead of time and you can call once on your way.

* Apply for Care Credit and have that medical credit for pet visits when you do have an emergency and you are short on cash as it gets EXPENSIVE FAST!

* If it involves an attack by another animal CONTACT ANIMAL CONTROL ASAP! This is also something to go ahead and place in your phone. If the previous steps are followed and covered, this is the call you can make while on your way to the emergency veterinarian.

These situations will never be easy breezy, Whether it's an illness, prolonged or sudden, an animal attack, or other injury. However having these steps in place can insure a quick and speedy response time to help save your pet and help ease your mind!

We will also demand justice for this so it never happens to anyone else, especially a smaller dog or child. Again we will keep people updated on the status of the investigation.
