Michigan: Deborah Lewandowski, 53, pleads guilty to animal abuse in Alpena

MICHIGAN -- A woman who was being accused of abusing and neglecting more than 80 animals has pleaded guilty.

Debra Lewandowski (also spelled Deborah Lewandowski on other news sites) pleaded guilty to animal abandoning/cruelty to ten or more animals.

The Alpena County Sheriff's Office searched the home located in Alpena County in August. Deputies found animals that were abused and neglected.

Animals that were seized from the property included dogs, pigs, donkeys and other livestock.

At a hearing in December, witnesses testified the animals were living in poor conditions, with hooves on several horses overgrown. Among the animals were two dozen cocker spaniels and the dogs had what were described as severe flea infestations.

In questioning one witness, defense lawyer Bill Yahne asked whether Lewandowski may have been taking steps to help the dogs.

A veterinarian says two horses, a dog and a donkey needed to be euthanized because of their poor health.

Lewandowski is scheduled to be sentenced March 21.
