INDIANA -- A New Castle couple have been placed on probation for a year after pleading guilty to not properly caring for their four dogs.
Larry L. and Kara L. Smith, both 32 and of the 400 block of South 12th Street, had pleaded guilty to cruelty to an animal on April 12, the same day the charges were filed against them.
Authorities said two of the four dogs – both boxers – were being kept in a basement with about three inches of standing water, feces and urine.
At a recent hearing, Henry Circuit Court 3 Judge Bob Witham gave both defendants a one-year jail term, which he suspended, and placed them on probation for a year.
The Smiths were also ordered to pay more than $1,000 in boarding and veterinary expenses incurred by the local animal shelter until the dogs – also including two chihuahuas – were transferred for adoption.
