Donovan Mackey pleads guilty after torturing and killing his girlfriend's cat

PENNSYLVANIA -- A man pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor charge in a disturbing case of animal cruelty in Wilkes-Barre.

In April, police say Donovan Mackey, 21, put his girlfriend's cat in the washing machine, killed it by slamming it against a wall, then put the remains in a garbage bag and threw it in the back yard.

According to officers, Mackey did it because his girlfriend wasn't home when he stopped by.

Mackey is scheduled to be sentenced in November.

Accused cat killer, Donovan Mackey's animal cruelty charge heads to Luzerne County Court

PENNSYLVANIA -- A city man accused of killing his girlfriend’s cat now faces an animal cruelty charge in Luzerne County Court.

Donovan Mackey, 20, of North Pennsylvania Avenue via video Thursday waived his right to a preliminary hearing before District Judge Martin Kane.

Police say Mackey on April 13 caused a cat’s death when he put it in a washing machine and slammed it against a wall.

Kane forwarded Mackey’s cruelty to animals charge to county court and allowed the withdrawal of a disorderly conduct charge with the understanding Mackey would negotiate a guilty plea with prosecutors.

“I really have a cold heart for this man,” Kane said.

Mackey remains incarcerated at Luzerne County Correctional Facility, held on a detainer related to $334 in unpaid fines from two traffic violations.

According to police, Mackey went looking for his girlfriend — who was not home — at her North Main Street residence.

He allegedly captured the woman’s cat, placed the animal in the washing machine and turned it on.

Police say Mackey then wrapped the cat in a bed sheet and slammed it against several walls, putting holes in some of the walls.

When the cat was dead, police say Mackey put its carcass in a garbage bag and tossed it in back yard.

Donovan Mackey Arrested for Killing Cat after Putting it in Washing Machine

PENNSYLVANIA -- Police accuse a man of killing his girlfriend’s cat by tossing it in the washing machine then putting it in a sheet and swinging it into walls.

The kitten named Bookie was only about 9 months old when police say Donovan Mackey, 20, of Wilkes-Barre killed it.

Investigators said first Mackey stuffed the kitten into a washing machine and turned it on. Then he wrapped it into a bed sheet and beat the kitten against a wall until it died.

There are holes in the wall that show the amount of force allegedly used by Mackey.

Police say it all happened when Mackey went looking for his girlfriend in her apartment on North Main Street and couldn’t find her.

“He just come, kick the door, and asked about her. And I told him, ‘She`s not here. She left,’” said a man who also lives in the home, but did not want to be identified. “He put it in the sheet of the bed, kept on slamming it like 6 or 7 times.”

After the cat died, Mackey then allegedly threw its remains in a garbage bag and then tossed it in the home’s backyard.

“That`s horrific, I can’t believe that,” said Robert Palchanis of Wilkes-Barre.

“The really sad part of it is it`s almost worse than a human being, because they can`t tell you what`s wrong,” said Terry Palchinis of Wilkes-Barre.

Police arrested Mackey on a parole violation and charged him with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct.

“He`s in jail and that`s animal cruelty, so they`ll punish him for it and he deserves it,” Palchinis said.
“He would do this to somebody else. Not only animals, he would do this to human, too,” said the man who did not want to be identified.

Mackey is now in the Luzerne County jail. Along with animal cruelty he’s also being held on an unrelated charge.
