Minnesota: "From playing in the white sand to patient at the vet. Attacked by a pit bull on our walk this morning"

MINNESOTA -- Katrina Welch posted to Facebook February 16, 2018 ·

From playing in the white sand to patient at the vet.

Attacked by a pit bull on our walk this morning.

Tough girl is doing ok but in some serious pain. Think mom might be more traumatized than girl but, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pain meds and a whole lot of rest and she will be ok.

Gonna be a rough week ahead.

Minnesota: Woman claims Ruff Start Rescue won't accept responsibility after one of their dogs mauls her little Schnauzer

MINNESOTA -- Ruff Start Rescue, a local rescue, approved a vicious dog for adoption. A month after being adopted, this dog ripped its leash from its owner's hand and mauled this little dog.

According to the GoFundMe page, Ruff Start Rescue is REFUSING TO PAY THE VET BILLS. Well of course they are. After all, they collected their adoption money from the gullible owner and don't care what happens after that person leaves their building with one of their dogs.

Do you think this is fair? That they can simply wash their hands of it all? If I were this little dog's owner, I'd get an attorney and subpoena their documents to find out what kind of testing they do on dogs to ensure safety of others.

Where did this dog come from? Did they know it was vicious? Was it one of those dogs pulled from a "high kill" shelter that should have been euthanized but because shelters are under such pressure to keep their "kill rate" down, they shuttled this dog - a dog that never should have been put on the adoption floor - out the door to this rescue who then rehomed sold it to this innocent adopter?

We've all seen the stories of 'rescue dogs' attacking and killing other people's pets, attacking children and adults, attacking and even killing their new owners.

And what kind of dog typically is so strong it rips the leash out of the hands of its owners? Hmm.. remember the woman walking her Pit Bulls that yanked the leashes out of her hand and knocked her down in their excitement over being able to chase and maul the neighbor's Poodle named Bobo?

Happy little Bobo, before the attack

Minnesota: Brandon Hesse Hamilton accused of body-slamming puppy over and over, breaking her leg

MINNESOTA -- A Detroit Lakes man accused of body slamming a 14-week-old puppy three or four times and breaking its leg is now charged with a felony rather than a gross misdemeanor.

Brandon Scott Hesse Hamilton, 32, of Detroit Lakes has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony cruelty to an animal.

The charge was upgraded after the Becker County Attorney's Office reviewed the final veterinary and police reports, according to the Becker County Court Administration Office.

According to court records, shortly before noon on Thursday, a Detroit Lakes police officer was called to Hesse Hamilton's house on Gary Avenue to check on the status of a dog that he had allegedly badly beaten.

The officer was met by Hesse Hamilton's sister, who was holding a black and white Bluetick Coonhound puppy named Millie. She told the officer she was afraid that Millie's leg was broken.

That morning Hesse Hamilton and several other people were at the residence playing video games. Millie got up and defecated on the floor. The sister said she heard Hesse Hamilton swear and watched him walk over and pick up Millie.

He allegedly raised her over his head and slammed her down into the feces on the floor.

She heard the dog yelp in pain, but Hesse Hamilton allegedly continued to pick up the dog and slam her to the floor several more times.

He reportedly rubbed the dog into the feces every time he slammed her down.

After the beating, Millie was unable to get up. Hesse Hamilton grabbed the dog, dragged her outside and tied her up. T

he sister continued to hear the dog yelp in pain and went outside to try to comfort Millie by wrapping her in a blanket. Hesse Hamilton came outside, took the blanket away, put his hand on Millie's head and shoved it into the ground, saying "don't s..t on my floor."

The sister told him to leave the dog alone, and stayed with Millie, but couldn't get her to move. She took Millie inside and gave her a bath, and the puppy yelped in pain the whole time she was being bathed.

Hesse Hamilton left the home and was not there when the police officer arrived.

The officer interviewed others who were at the home, and they gave similar accounts of what happened.

The officer took the dog to the Marshmallow Foundation, which serves as the Detroit Lakes animal shelter. It was confirmed that Millie had a broken leg and needed surgery.

Hesse Hamilton's wife, Ashley, who owns the dog, said she had no money to pay for the surgery, and surrendered ownership of Millie, who was taken to the University of Minnesota for complex surgery.

The officer went back to the residence. Hesse Hamilton was there and denied hurting the dog. He was arrested and taken to jail.

On Friday, he appeared in court before District Judge Michelle Lawson, who set cash bail at $300 or bond at $3,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $6,000 without conditions.

Hesse Hamilton's application for a public defender was denied because of an incomplete application. Court records said there was no indication of his wife's income and the amount of worker's compensation being received.

Dr. James K. McCormack of the Detroit Lakes Animal Hospital said he examined Millie.

"We triaged and identified the lameness to right rear leg," he said. "We sedated and took X-rays and gave treatment options, and luckily for Millie she was able to go down to the University (of Minnesota) where they could plate and wire and pin these pieces back together."

He said the surgery went well, but Millie isn't out of the woods yet.

"There is a lot of muscle trauma," he said, "so time is really going to be the tell here. If we can heal this up and keep the muscles from scarring up into all this trauma site, we should have a fairly good leg coming back to stand on, but if the muscles get scarred up into the fracture site as things heal, we can get a lot of tie-down or loss of motion."

Millie is now recovering in a foster home, according to a post on the Marshmallow Foundation's Facebook page, "but she has a long road ahead of her. Unlike most 4-month-old puppies, she is unable to go outside and run and play ... During the surgery, she had a bone plate and 9 metal screws placed within her leg. Her activity is severely restricted for 4-6 weeks in order to give her leg a chance to heal. So playing and running will have to be placed on hold for now, but at least she is safe and being spoiled every single day!"

The Marshmallow Foundation has set up an online donation site at YouCaring to help offset Millie's medical costs.

On 8/24/17 our staff received news that a puppy with a broken leg would be surrendered to the care of the shelter immediately following a veterinary exam to determine the extent of her injuries likely suffered at the hands of her owner.  Her name is Millie and she is 14 weeks old. She needs your help and your donations so that she can hopefully make a full recovery! We are hoping to have her scheduled for the next step in her care either tonight or tomorrow!

There are still a lot of unknowns and we will do our best to keep everyone up-to-date on the case but here is what we have:

-Millie is a 14 week old Female mixed puppy (pics coming soon) who has a broken leg that either needs to be fixed or amputated.

-She was seen on 8/24/17 by a local veterinary clinic in Detroit Lakes and had an exam and X-rays performed as well as pain medication given to help while she awaits her next step in treatment.

-The local clinic cannot perform the surgery/fix the leg and they are working to refer her to either the University of Minnesota or another comparable facility that can help with her special case. Once this is determined we will update everyone.

-There is a pending investigation and a person has been arrested and is in custody.

**We increased the fundraiser to $5000 due to follow up visits to the veterinarian, radiographs, medications, etc.

UPDATED:  Millie is on her way to the U of M in the Twin Cities to have surgery on Friday, 8/25/17.

UPDATE 8/28/17: Millie is doing well in her foster home and continues to recover from surgery. She is one spunky girl who is so brave and continues to amaze us every day! Millie underwent major surgery on 8/25/17 at the University of Minnesota to repair a right femoral fracture (broken leg).  This injury occurred because one of her owners allegedly picked her up and slammed her into the floor 4 times for house soiling.  This incident was witnessed by another person and thankfully the police were notified and Millie was taken to a veterinarian immediately.  Her alleged abuser was arrested and is charged with a crime with a court date set in early September.

Please keep Millie in your thoughts and prayers and share her story! All of us at the shelter are humbled by the people that have generously donated their time and efforts as well as money to helping Millie. Every single penny adds up and we hope that you will keep spreading the word about donating to help with Millie's medical expenses!

Minnesota: Eden Prairie officers rescue kitten and heron in separate incidents

MINNESOTA -- Eden Prairie Police Department posted on Facebook July 17, 2017

In the past week EPPD Community Service Officers (CSOs) have had two unique animal rescues.

First, last Wednesday night CSO Spencer Barrie was dispatched to an area of Purgatory Creek where a 911 caller had reported a blue heron caught in a net intended to keep carp out of the creek.

The water was knee-high so CSO Barrie took off his boots and socks, rolled up his pants and waded into the creek. The heron was not initially cooperative and struggled with CSO Barrie who was eventually able to free it.

The second rescue occurred on Sunday night when a woman who had just driven from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie called to say that she thought there was a cat stuck in her car’s engine compartment.

CSO Lars Anderson responded to the call and spent the next hour working with the driver and her boyfriend to free the cat from the car.

It took them an hour to pull apart the bumper and wheel well and eventually a tiny kitten emerged.

It did not belong to the owner of the car so CSO Anderson brought it to an animal shelter.

Minnesota: "She did not deserve to die this way"

MINNESOTA -- Jennifer Stover Freeman posted on Facebook June 19, 2017 ·

She has taken a turn for the worse and I really need her to get better. — feeling sad at BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

SAD UPDATE

Jennifer Stover Freeman added 9 new photos — feeling heartbroken.
June 20 at 12:48pm · Minneapolis, MN ·

Words cannot describe the horrible sadness I am feeling today. AnnaBella Cecilia Tinks (Bella) passed away peacefully in my arms this morning.

She has been a part of this family for 12 years and was the light in our lives, my little princess girl. I adopted her at a rescue but little did she know she rescued me. She was with me while I went through a terrible divorce and has been my little shadow following me everywhere I would go.

She was the sweetest dog and did not have an aggressive bone in her body so for her to die from a horrific dog attack is most devastating to me. She did not deserve to die this way.

We did everything we could to save you but the damage that dog did to you was too much for your little body to take.

I know you are in a better place and free of pain my little Bella but you are so very deeply missed. I was your favorite human and you were my most loyal puppy. We love you and you will remain forever in our hearts. ❤️

Minnesota: Steve Woollett and his daughter Amber Woollett charged with Misdemeanors after their three Pit Bulls ran out and mauled this beautiful little Sheltie to death and attacked its owner

MINNESOTA -- Charges have been filed against the owners of three dogs that allegedly escaped a kennel and killed another dog that was being walked by a Cloquet woman last week.

Stephen Woollett, 59, and Amber Woollett, 22, both of Cloquet, each are charged with misdemeanor counts of dangerous animals — attack by an animal and dogs running at large. Amber Woollett faces two counts of each, while Stephen Woollett faces one of each. The charges each carry maximum penalties of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint:

Cloquet police received a report of a dog attack at about 3:45 p.m. on June 5. Kayla Wenneson told the officer that she had been walking her miniature Sheltie, Kaito, on Eighth Street and passed a home where three dogs in a kennel were barking.

SHELTIE HAD NO CHANCE AGAINST THREE PIT BULLS
Wenneson said the three dogs escaped the kennel, ran across the street and attacked Kaito. Wenneson struggled to get her dog away from the other three, and was bitten on the finger.

A passerby stopped to help and was able to pull one of the attacking dogs back so that Wenneson could grab Kaito; the good Samaritan told Wenneson to get into her vehicle — as the three dogs continued jumping, trying to get at the wounded dog — and drove Wenneson and Kaito to Cloquet Animal Hospital. Kaito died during emergency surgery.

DOGS CITED AS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS JUST A MONTH EARLIER
A police officer later drove Wenneson back to the scene, where she identified the house where the dogs came from.

The officer "was familiar with the residence and knew the owners had received potentially dangerous dog notices stemming from a prior incident the previous month," the complaint states.

The officer made contact with the homeowner, Stephen Woollett; one of the dogs was registered to him, and the other two to Amber Woollett, who also lives at the residence, the complaint states.

One of the dogs — a pit bull named Princess — had blood on her nose and paw, the complaint states. The other dogs were a German Shepherd / Pit Bull mix named Bandit, and a Pit Bull named Obie.

The dogs were surrendered to Friends of Animals Humane Society.

Cloquet police Cmdr. Derek Randall said Tuesday that the dogs face potential euthanization.

"The process is still in the petition phase," he said. "The dogs are in quarantine. I do not know if the owners have opted to euthanize any of the dogs yet. They still have time to petition the city regarding the situation."

Wenneson told the Pine Journal last week that she was walking Kaito on their usual route when the attack happened. She said she did not see an owner of the dogs come out of the house during the attack, which she said lasted more than 10 minutes.

"(The dogs) were ripping him to shreds for 10 minutes before the lady drove by and stopped to help," she said. "I heard him cry out so loud at first and then nothing, complete silence. We just looked each other in the eyes and he was terrified."

The prior incident involving the three dogs, referenced in the criminal complaint, occurred on May 9.

Sarah Gustafson told the Cloquet Pine Journal that she was walking her leashed Labrador retriever/golden retriever, Rizzo, on Eighth Street past the same house when she noticed the dogs in a chain-link outdoor kennel.

"We had just walked past the owner's home and I saw one of the dogs in the kennel pulling at the bottom corner of the fence gate," said Gustafson. "Then another one slipped through which pried the gate open for the other two to get out."

A neighbor saw the dogs and tried to chase them away from Rizzo as they circled her and pulled on the dog from all angles. He succeeded in creating enough of a diversion for Gustafson to pick up her dog and escape with minor bites and scrapes.

Police were called, and — according to the complaint — notices were given to the Pit Bulls' owners [but the dogs weren't seized].

The defendants are due to appear in court July 24.

Minnesota: Two Pit Bulls and a Pit Bull German Shepherd mix mauled another dog and the city of Cloquet did NOTHING. Now they've mauled a beautiful little Sheltie to death and they're actually considering giving the killer dogs back to the owner AGAIN.

MINNESOTA -- A nice evening walk turned into tragedy for dog owner, Kayla Wennesson, Monday afternoon. As she was walking her dog, Kaito, three dogs - TWO PIT BULLS AND A GERMAN SHEPHERD MIX - ran across the street and attacked.

It happened on the 400 block of 8th St. in Cloquet, two blocks from her mom's house. It's an image that will never leave her head.

"It was just the most horrifying thing I've ever experienced and I didn't know that was going to be the last time I was going to hold him alive," Wenneson said.

She could only watch helplessly, as her dog fought for his life.

"I kept hitting the dogs with my feet and hitting the tops of the heads with their leash," Wenneson said. "They didn't even know I was there. They were just in attack mode to kill my dog."

She said Kaito had no chance against the German Shepard mix and two Pit bulls. Police said this isn't the first time these dogs have been violent. Another woman and her dog were attacked on May 9, but her dog survived.

The three Pit Bulls are owned by Steve Woollett, Kathy Woollett and their adult daughter Amber Woollett, who all live in the same household.

"Since this has happened again, paperwork is being submitted to certify those dogs as dangerous dogs," Commander Derek Randall of the Cloquet Police Department said.

Why didn't you do anything the first time???

To own a dangerous dog in the state of Minnesota, the requirements include a proper enclosure, warning signs and insurance.

Ooh some signs. That'll do the trick! Proper enclosures. Hmm OK well when they say they'll just keep the maulers in the house, then what? And insurance? Big deal it's about $600/year. THEY NEED TO BE EUTHANIZED NOW.

"There's also a possibility that they will be put down which is part of our city ordinance if we have animals that are attacking or have attacked or killed other domestic animals," Randall said.

The three dogs are being held at the Cloquet Animal Shelter for ten days while they finish the investigation.

Thanks Cloquet, Minnesota for doing NOTHING!

APOLOGIST
"It's not that I'm against pit bulls or anything," Wenneson said. "I really do think it is a matter of the owner and how they train their dog."

This article/interview I believe was done before the comments on Facebook. Therefore, I think she was like most victims of Pit Bull attacks. They simply had NO clue how many animals, children and people are mauled and killed by Pit Bulls. They went about their life, maybe came across the occasional Pit Bull that belonged to a friend and thought nothing of it.

Based on her FB comments I think she understands the truth: IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THE OWNER IS. IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW THEY "TRAIN" THEIR DOG. OR RAISE IT.

It is inherent in the breed just like a Border Collie - and SHELTIE - wants to herd things. Just like they use Bloodhounds to track people rather than Yorkies. Just like Pointers point. You cannot "untrain" 100s of years of selective breeding by treating it kindly as you raise it. Can you raise a tiger from a cub and expect it to not want to kill people? Of course not. You cannot do this with these types of dogs either.

THESE PEOPLE, I'M SURE, WOULD ARGUE THAT THEY DIDN'T ABUSE THEIR PIT BULL, THAT THEY "RAISED IT RIGHT" WITH "LOVE AND WITH CHILDREN AND OTHER PETS", THAT IT WAS "TRAINED" TO BE KIND AND GOOD AND A LOVING FAMILY PET - AND YET ONE DAY, THEIR PIT BULL DECIDED TO KILL THEM, THEIR CHILDREN, THEIR PETS, THEIR NEIGHBORS, AND/OR THEIR NEIGHBOR'S PETS

HOW MANY MORE EXAMPLES DO YOU
NEED TO ACCEPT THE TRUTH?

While the shock is still raw, Kayla just hopes that something is done so this won't happen again.

Police said if you know of any neighborhoods or homes that may have dangerous dogs, contact them or animal control.

Yeah contact them. But they won't do anything.

No animal deserves to die this way. Baby boy, baby boy.. I don't know where to start but no words will describe the love I have and always will have for you.:(

I was walking my dog on our usual route we have walked for years. We were just a few blocks away from home when 3 pit bulls came out of no where / escaped the kennel they were locked in and attacked him. Watching my entire world get fought over like a chew toy was the most traumatizing thing I have ever experinced.

He looked right in to my eyes like he was begging me to get them off of him and I tried. I tried and tried and tried and I wish I would have tried harder because now he is gone and I don't know what to do. He didn't deserve it. He was the best dog I have ever owned. I still can not grasp that he is gone..

Rest in peace baby boy. I am not okay without you right now. I wish I would have known it was our last walk.

Kayla Wenneson - I'm literally covered in his blood right now at the hospital to get cleaned up from getting bit by one of the dogs. I know not to get in to a dog fight but he was dying and I could hear it with the noises he was making and I just :( I just dont know why something like this would happen to him.

Katie Fagan - Oh my god I'm so sorry, Kayla. Did you call the police to report those dogs? 💔😓😢

Kayla Wenneson - Oh my mom and I are taking them to court, no doubt

Allie Pybas - Please please please report the dogs to the police. It makes my heart so sad knowing he went through that with you present. Not being able to help your baby must have been the most impossible thing. I wouldn't want it to happen to any other person or animal. The owners need to take responsibility for what happened. Ugh my heart is heavy for you. Prayers! 💕

Kayla Wenneson - Yes. Exactly. Thank you for understanding:( watching the thing you love most die and suffer and not be able to do anything as youre trying your hardest.. I seriously hope no one ever has to go through that, I'm still in shock and have not accepted he is dead:( we are for sure taking them to court. I think the dog is getting put down anyways tho since it wasn't its first attack.

Denise Lindau Agenter - Oh sweetie! I'M SO SO SORRY! ☹ You did as much as you could for him. One pit bull would have been too much. You were a brave mommy and he knows how much you love him and that you fought for him honey. I can't imagine the trauma. You know I am always here for you. I love you and I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope you are ok. I'm sure you didn't realize how dangerous it was for you because of your little guy. As sad and horrible as it is I'm thankful you are still alive ♡ please let me know if you need anything.

Kayla Wenneson - Oh god I hope he knows how hard I tried to save his life it was so hard cause I was in shock too:( the vet said he was in such shock he probably didn't feel anything which I pray to god is true:( he was such a sweet boy, the best boy I have ever ever had. He was my best friend and he didn't deserve it. I wish so bad we wouldn't have walked down that block or ended our walk earlier. I wish so bad i knew that was going to be the last time I ever saw him:( I wish he was With me right now being his usual happy self and this never happened:( thank you Denise.

Kayla Wenneson - Just for an update to everyone since this was in the paper. After making this post, the cop called to inform me the woman standing on the lawn was a neighbor dropping off mail and the owner was in his house supposedly not knowing anything was going on as I was screaming bloody murder for 10-20 minutes straight. It is frustrating this neighbor did not call the cops or try to go inside and get the owner or do anything other than stand there staring. I was also then informed how one of the dogs was a German shepherd mix and the other two were pits. Although this information doesn't really matter because the main point is my perfect, sweet, innocent baby was murdered by dogs who were out for blood and to kill. I just wanted to clarify that. I am meeting with my lawyer today and have already sent him all the information possible. Thank you to everyone for your support. I'm just trying to distract myself although it is impossible to stop thinking of what happened. I miss him so much and I truly do feel he was my child.. I can't explain it but I put him before everything, everyone, and myself. The support I have been recieivng from everyone I need so much and appreciate SO much, I just can't say it enough. I'm sorry if I have not yet gotten back to everyone, sometimes I just need a break from my phone and just want to spend time thinking of my dog. It feels like the attack was 5 minutes ago still, I can't believe how much time does not exist since the moment this all happened. All I can say again and again is thank you. when I start to do really bad, I read one of the sweet messages about my dog that is being sent to me and it helps SO much. ❤
