Indiana: After Pit Bull attacks elderly woman and mauls to death her beloved Poodle named Baby, authorities hand the mauler back to its owner

INDIANA -- Paula Herrig is feeling sad. Posted on Facebook May 3, 2018 ·

Need to vent!! Please Share. Maybe we can get this to the public and news in Indiana. Monday, my moms dog was viciously attached by a neighbors dog. (Mom is in Indiana with my sister, Peggy. That is where this took place)

Mom, 82 yrs old, fought to save her dog, Baby, not once, but twice. As the first time she got Baby, the pit bull attacked again, ripping Baby from her arms. She again fought the pit bull for her Baby.

Baby was in critical condition, until this morning, when she passed away. Mom was bit in the "fight". The pit bull was returned to it's owner!!!!!Where it still is!!!!!

The owner admitted to fault, stating they knew the dog was getting out, but they couldn't afford a "better" fence. But the dog is still returned to that home!?!?

Are you kidding me???? What has to happen for a dog to be removed??? Killing a pet and biting the pets owner isn't enough?? INDIANA, WTF!?!? JUST SOOO WRONG!!!!

My heart aches for you mom!! LOVE YOU!!

Indiana: "Bella was outside on a chain with me earlier when a loose pit bull attacked her. I’m so lucky I was there and she’s alive"

INDIANA -- Rachael Marie Chatham posted on Facebook February 18, 2018 ·

Today was the worst but really made me realize just how much this little muppet has touched people’s lives. I’m glad so many of you love her so much. She means the world to me.

Bella was outside on a chain with me earlier when a loose pit bull attacked her. I’m so lucky I was there and she’s alive. I’m also lucky my grandma was there. She grabbed Bella while I ripped the other dog off.

I never let Bella outside alone and I’m really glad I don’t. Never let your dog run loose. If I see you with a loose dog, I’m stabbing you in the eye. Fair warning.

So, thanks jerk who allowed your aggressive dog off leash. You owe about $1000 once I find you.

Indiana: For weeks, convicted felon Lemontrae Bible, 24, beat a tiny puppy, breaking multiple bones, say police

INDIANA -- A man has been arrested and charged with severely beating a 4-month-old puppy so badly that he broke multiple bones.

Lemontrae Bible, 24, was arrested Friday at a home on N. Kenyon Street.

According to police reports, Bible was charged as part of an investigation into animal abuse where a 4-month-old puppy was beaten severely.

Bible’s girlfriend, Holly Brand, says he started hurting the puppy shortly after she got it for her daughter.

“He had pistol whipped her and actually had a broken tooth,” said Brand.

She says the abuse started after the puppy had an accident in their home.

“I didn’t really think it was that bad – I didn’t want to believe it. I don’t know. I should have stepped up more sooner,” said Brand.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found the puppy while responding a house on N. Kenyon Street.

The puppy, named Halsey, is being cared for by Zionsville-based rescue Every Dog Counts. The group shared some of Halsey’s story on their page Thursday, along with a link to raise money for her care and recovery.

Halsey was so abused that she suffered extensive jaw and head fractures, broken bones and had to have a tube inserted so that she could get nutrients while she recovers.

“Her abuser left her with multiple skull fractures, a broken jaw, multiple broken ribs and a badly broken forearm,” the rescue posted on their Facebook page. “She sat like this for days, with no help or pain relief before she was found and rescued.”

Halsey went in for surgery on Thursday, according to the rescue, to try to save her leg, which was broken completely in two.

“Through the process of multiple diagnostic tests, we’ve realized that this has probably been going on for a while – more than one incident,” said Dr. Johnny Cross, Medical Director, VCA Advanced Veterinary Care.

“It is simply not fair for life to have been so brutal and painful for this baby,” the rescue posted.

If you would like to donate to Halsey’s care you can visit the Every Dog Counts Rescue Facebook page and click “donate” under Halsey’s story.

The rescue will also help find Halsey find her forever home when she’s fully recovered and ready to be adopted.

Bible is charged with animal cruelty and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Indiana: Defonte Acklin beat and tortured his four-month-old puppy, say police

INDIANA -- An anonymous caller told officers Aug. 5 that noises were coming from a Francis Street apartment that sounded like a dog was being beaten.

That day, an Animal Care & Control officer went to the apartment where she found Nani, a four-month-old puppy, trembling in a bathtub and covered in excrement and urine. Her breed was not mentioned in court documents.

The owner, Defonte C. Acklin, 22, of the 4400 block of Standish Drive, told police Nani had gotten into the trash when he left his apartment for about 15 minutes and she had urinated and defecated on the floor.

The dog “knew she was in trouble as she ran into her kennel as if to hide from him,” Acklin told the officer. He got his hand bitten when he reached into the kennel to pull her out, causing a puncture wound, court documents said.

Acklin said he had “whooped her ass with the arm of the chair,” and produced the chair arm, although he wouldn't allow the officer to take it with her, court records said.

Nani had bloodshot eyes and there were red fluid droplets all over the base of the bathtub.

At the Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency Hospital, doctors said Nani had bruises on her lungs and respiratory distress, fractures to her teeth and was missing her front incisors.

There was blood in her ear canals and her oral cavity and a red lesion to her right ear with other eye injuries. She was limping and several of her ribs were fractured, injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to the thorax.

Acklin was charged with felony torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal and two misdemeanor charges of cruelty to an animal. He was being held at the Allen County Jail held in lieu of $4,000 bail.

Nani was adopted into another home on Aug. 30.

Indiana: Woman climbs on top of car to get away from Pit Bull after it seriously mauls both her legs

INDIANA -- Carla Arnold Polk was feeling scared. Posted on Facebook January 2, 2018 ·

So I was so glad to get to 2018! Now I’m not too sure. I got attacked by a pit bull last night.

Did a lot of damage to both legs, but I am alive and I will recover. I really wonder what this dog is going through to attack for no reason, literally I was walking from my car to the house.

My right leg is the worst of the two, he got me in several different spots on my calf and once on the thigh.

Then on my left leg there are puncture wounds and a long tear. I am using a walker because I can not put a lot of pressure on my legs because the pain is unreal!!

The owner of the dog never apologized, but told the police this is the second time the dog has attacked someone!

I have no hard feelings against the dog but it’s owner will be paying all my medical bills,

They will also be paying for the lost time from work.

Messed up my family tattoo that I got with my sisters. I am not a let’s sue everyone kind of person but I am looking for a lawyer. I know some are thinking be grateful you are ok and it’s just a tattoo!

Well I am grateful I am ok and I will recover, and yes I can get a new tattoo. But I should not have to pay all these bills, miss time off work, or be in this much pain.

I have to go back to the hospital on Wednesday, to make sure there is no infection. Please pray that these wounds heal with no issues.

I just don’t understand. If you want to see pics, I’m putting them in the comments. Let me warn you, they are very gross.

*  *  *  *  *  *

Katia Grey - Hey I feel like families should trust their dog though. No offense but this is what I live by as a pitbull owner. If she don't like you, I don't like you and you didn't have good intentions in your spirit.

Carla Arnold Polk - I was not at this dogs house, not in the dogs yard or anything. The dog came in my friends yard and attacked me!! The family doesn’t need a dog they can not control.

I didn’t do anything but get out of my vehicle and start walking up to my friends door. So I really have no clue what you are talking about. You nor this damn dog knows what my fucking intentions were!!!

Michael G. Sparger - I'm so sorry this happened to you. A pit bull from across the street, tried to attack my son about a month ago. I got to the dog, before he got to my son. The pit now drags his legs, when he walks.

Jeni Hockema Ware - So sorry, Carla! I see several comments about putting the dog down, but what about having the owner arrested? He admitted that out has attacked before and failed to keep it contained. That's like pointing a loaded gun at someone and having it go off accidentally. The owner won't learn unless he is punished and held responsible in every way possible.

Tammy Lonas - Wow Carla how did you manage to get away from that dog ?? That had to be so scary for you. And what kind of person does not even apologize. I love it you are not having bad feelings towards the dog bc it would be hard not too. You are definitely the bigger person here. So sorry that happened to you and the pain you have to be feeling. Like you already don’t have enough in your life going on some dumb ass is care less with his dog. Follow through and talk to an attorney and get what you can from that p.o.s owner. I hope that doesn’t make you fear dogs now. Get well soon. If you need anything holler ok 😘

Carla Arnold Polk - I got away because Antion Payton started to come out of the house and the dog charged him, I was barely able to climb into the top of his car.

No the dog isn’t his, it’s the neighbors dog. I do believe the dog needs put down but this is on its owner, not the dog.

The worst part is the pain, and the pain meds not working but to curve the pain, not take it away.

But I must give thanks to Antion for getting me help ASAP. To my family for being there for me and taking care of and locking me unconditionally. And to each and everyone of your prayers and thoughts.

Carla Arnold Polk - They are holding the dog for 10 days then they they will put him down

Indiana: The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office refuses to file animal cruelty charges against owner who let her German Shepherd slowly starve to death, riddled with parasites and worms

INDIANA -- No criminal charges will be filed after a dog was found severely underweight last month.

The two-year-old German shepherd named Riley was taken to a shelter in Quincy after being found at a home in Columbus. He was nearly 50 pounds underweight and was suffering from kidney failure. In addition, he had parasites and worms.

He was in such bad condition that he died within a day of starting treatment at Four Loving Paws Veterinary Services in Brazil. Photos of the emaciated dog sparked outrage on social media when they were posted on Nov. 12.

Dr. John Shepherd with Four Loving Paws Veterinary Services Riley was very sick when he was brought to the facility He was underweight and lacked energy. He said it’s uncommon for young dogs to be as sick as Riley was.

Joanie Zupan owns Indiana GSD and Siberian Husky Rescue, the Quincy shelter where Riley was initially taken. She said she wanted to press charges against Riley’s former owners.

“There needs to be some kind of justice done for Riley, but for all animals,” Zupan told FOX59 last month. “People like this need to realize that they aren’t just going to be yelled at, slapped on the wrist—they need go to jail.”

Zupan filed an incident report with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office. Detective Jason Williams was assigned to investigate the case and interviewed several people involved in caring for Riley. The dog had multiple owners, police said.

Two veterinarian offices treated Riley for whipworms and coccidian. Whipworms are intestinal parasites that live in a dog’s cecum and colon, causing severe irritation to the lining of the organs. An infection can result in weight loss and “general debilitation” for a dog.

Coccidian infections cause diarrhea and can be fatal; many dogs don’t display symptoms. The illnesses contributed to Riley’s weight loss and dehydration, Williams found. As a result, the sheriff’s office concluded that no criminal charges should be filed.

“After a thorough investigation, that included interviewing numerous subjects involved, verifying the illnesses from which Riley suffered and reviewing reports from veterinarians, Detective Williams found no probable cause to make a criminal case and or arrest regarding the death of Riley,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers in a statement.

I don't believe they did a thorough investigation. Provide proof that the most-recent owner provided veterinary care for this dog. Taking the dog in, getting some free medication and never taking it back to the vet - despite its condition worsening - does NOT count.

Indiana: Appeals court upholds animal cruelty convictions against Charles Clark, who was caught on video torturing, stomping and beating his then-girlfriend's dog

INDIANA -- A southern Indiana woman set up a video camera in her house in an attempt to catch her boyfriend cheating on her with another woman.

Instead, she recorded him torturing her dog, Dudley, by putting the animal in a chokehold and repeatedly punching it in the rib cage.

In another video clip, the boyfriend, Charles P. Clark, of Aurora, was seen stomping on the dog as it sat on the couch.

Aurora Police Sgt. Shane Slack called the March 2017 incident “one of the worst cases I’ve seen in 13 years as far as animal abuse.”

On Wednesday, Clark had his Level 6 felony convictions on two counts of cruelty to an animal upheld by the Indiana Court of Appeals.

At a May 25, 2017, sentencing hearing, Clark, 43, admitted to the offenses but claimed he couldn’t remember them due to a blackout from medication he was taking for mental health problems. He also testified that he was unemployed and had four children from two previous marriages.

Clark had been sentenced by Dearborn Superior Court Judge Sally McLaughlin on each count to 910 days in jail with 365 days suspended to probation on each count. He effectively received a sentence of [just] 1-1/2 years’ imprisonment.

Clark appealed, saying his sentence was inappropriate in light of the nature of the offenses and his character.

In upholding the sentence, the appellate court found that Clark said he was seeking mental health treatment but had presented no evidence he was on medication at the time of the incident.

Attempts by CNHI to reach Clark’s defense attorney in Madison were unsuccessful.

Edited for length:  Court of Appeals of Indiana | Memorandum Decision 15A05-1706-CR-1432 | November 22, 2017. Click here to read in its entirety.

FACTS AND PROCEDURAL HISTORY
On March 20, 2017, Clark’s girlfriend reported to the Aurora Police Department, in Indiana, that Clark had been abusing their dog, a rescued boxer breed, named Dudley.

She presented Sergeant Shane Slack (Sergeant Slack) with videos that she had secretly recorded in an attempt to catch Clark cheating on her with another woman “because he had been acting different lately.”

The videos depicted Clark picking “the dog up and slam[ming] it [in]to the couch and then put[ting] it in a choke hold and begin[ing] to punch it repeatedly in the rib cage.”

The animal attempted to escape the punishment and was crying.

In another clip of the video, Clark is observed “stomping down on the dog as it was sitting on the floor below him on the couch.”

After reviewing the videos, Sergeant Slack declared this to be “one of the worst cases I’ve seen in thirteen years as far as animal abuse.”

Police officers arrested Clark at his home, where he admitted that he had abused the animal but [claimed] that “afterwards he feels bad about it.”

DISCUSSION AND DECISION
Clark severely beat, punched, and strangled a helpless dog without any
provocation. The animal was a family pet and the senseless violence occurred
on more than one occasion. While the visible injuries may have healed, Dudley continued to experience mental scars for a significant period of time after Clark relinquished the dog.

Dudley’s current owner, who adopted him approximately a week later, testified that Dudley, at first, was “very guarded” and “depressed.”  “It was like he was afraid to do anything except lay or sit. He was just scared.”

For a time, Dudley experienced “quite violent nightmares,” during which he cried out loud and shook all over.

Even though Clark admitted that he had abused Dudley after being confronted with the video recordings; nevertheless, during the sentencing hearing, Clark attempted to present himself as the victim by claiming that he had blacked out because of medication. However, besides his own self-serving statement, he presented no evidence that he was on any medication at the time of the offenses. While it is commendable that Clark has accepted his mental health problems and is seeking help, this acknowledgment is a bit late for Dudley.

CONCLUSION
Based on the foregoing, we hold that the trial court’s imposed sentence is not inappropriate in light of the nature of the offenses and Clark’s character.

Affirmed.

Indiana: Fred Strohm from the Humane Society wants you to believe that Pit Bulls only attack because mean people make them do it

INDIANA --  A dog attack at 1540 Spruce Street in Terre Haute on Friday is causing one couple to call for change.

This is their second dog attack in six months but this time there were no fatalities.

Still the couple is ready for someone to take responsibility.

For Phil Deckert and Jenifer Thomas Friday was a reoccurring nightmare.

"The cat was out on the front porch, we heard a scream, I looked out there and their were two pit bulls mauling it," says Phil Deckert, cat owner.

Though they are thankful their beloved pet didn't die - it somehow survived with broken ribs - and they are stuck with the vet bill, they are afraid that if something doesn't change soon animals won't be the only ones that need to be cautious.

"I have had two attacks on my animals by pit bulls in the last six months. Eventually it is going to be a small child or an elderly person," says Deckert.

For the couple they didn't just almost lose a pet, they almost lost a member of the family.

Deckert says, "because she can't have children or anything, this is the closest thing she can have to a child."

"My cats are my everything. I haven't stopped crying since. I am tired of losing animals. Like he said, next it could be one of our nieces or nephews," says Jenifer Thomas, cat owner.

FOUND THE APOLOGISTS!!!!

Despite their frustrations the couple doesn't blame the breed. They are upset with owners that aren't taking proper care of their pets.

Seriously, shut up.

APOLOGIST FRED STROHM WORKS FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY

The Humane Society says you can't blame a breed for the actions of an individual, someone has to take responsibility.

"If you think about kind of the bad rap that these breeds have gotten it is the Pit Bulls, before then it was the German Shepherds, before then it was the Rottweilers, and then it was the Dobermans. Where is the common thread there? It is the people that have them. It all depends on the person that is taking responsibility of the animal that is supposed to be in their care," says Fred Strohm, operations manager of the Terre Haute Humane Society.

Fred Strohm is a complete moron. He wants you to think vicious Pit Bulls are ONLY owned by "bad people", by "mean people". The truth is, they're owned by all sorts of people just as mean/bad people own Collies. Mean/bad people own Goldendoodles. Mean/bad people own Irish Wolfhounds. Yet, when is the last time you heard of those 'abused' breeds of dogs attacking and killing people and other pets? It's not that the news doesn't report it - despite what the apologists say - it's BECAUSE IT'S NOT HAPPENING

The couple filed a police report with the Terre Haute Police Department.

If you recognize the dogs in the video or have any information about their owner please contact the Terre Haute Police Department immediately.
