(October 2017) Tennessee: Animal Control officers find kitten and baby raccoon cuddling together inside dumpster

TENNESSEE -- Knoxville Police Department - TN added 3 new photos to Facebook October 18, 2017 ·

Knoxville Police Department Animal Control Officer Nick Powell responded recently to a call of an animal stuck in a dumpster at the E-911 Center on Bernard Avenue.

When Officer Powell looked inside the dumpster he located two unusual companions - a kitten and a baby raccoon - cuddled in the corner keeping each other warm. Both animals were rescued by Animal Control Officer Powell.

UPDATE: The raccoon was relocated and released. The kitten was transported to Young Williams Animal Center.

If they're saying it's a baby raccoon, doesn't that mean it's too young to be on its own? Shouldn't it be sent to a wildlife rehabilitator first?

New York: Police say Hank Smith strangled his ex-girlfriend's mother's Miniature Pinscher to death then threw his body into a dumpster

NEW YORK -- Police say Hank Smith, 26, faces three charges from his arrest on Wednesday: aggravated animal cruelty, possession of a weapon and possession of a stolen property.

Terri Brewer says she wants justice for her 12-year-old dog, Nick - who police say was strangled and dumped in the trash by Smith, who was arraigned in Clifton Park town court and remains in Saratoga County Jail on $20,000 bail.

"Hank threatened to kill my dog," Brewer told CBS6.

"He was my best friend, he was always there for me and my daughters and my grandson."

Court records show Smith admitted on Wednesday to killing the miniature pinscher dog by suffocation on October 14th, and throwing him away in a dumpster at the Fox Run apartments off Huntridge Road, where Terry lives and says Smith was staying.

"He was my daughter's ex-boyfriend, [but he was still] was staying with [me and] my daughter."

Brewer says Smith told her the dog passed away, and that he had buried it in the back yard. She grew suspicious and called police.

She says she just found out that Smith trashed Nick in the dumpster yesterday.

"I knew something wasn't right and my gut was telling me that Hank did it," she said.

According to police, Smith claimed the dog was elderly, and needed to be euthanized eventually. He also admitted to drinking alcohol at the time.

"It's tragic, but it's happening all too often," said Senator Jim Tedisco, who is an outspoken animal rights advocate and proponent of Buster's Law - which Smith was arrested under.

"It's a bridge crime" Tedisco said. "People who hurt animals in this way go on to hurt people, and that's why the FBI last year put it up on an A level as an indicator."

A quote from the court records says the "defendant did this act in a depraved and sadistic manner which led to its death."

"I hope he gets what he deserves," Brewer said.

Police say when they arrested Smith yesterday, they found him with a knife on him as well as those stolen prescription drugs, reported missing in September from a car down the road from the apartments.

Police are now saying they're very interested in Smith for other recent car larcenies in Clifton Park.

Massachusetts: The slippery story of a squirrel, a dumpster, and some butter

MASSACHUSETTS -- This squirrel slipped up. But its journey from stuck-in-a-hole to back-on-the-mend was a relatively smooth one.

Officials from the Animal Rescue League of Boston this week said they were called to an unusual scene involving a fluffy-tailed critter that somehow managed to get its head lodged into an opening at the base of a dumpster in Quincy. It had likely been in search of leftovers and discarded food, but wound up empty-pawed and immobile.

To make matters worse, a Quincy animal control officer tried rubbing oil on the squirrel to get it out. No dice.

Then a Good Samaritan tried to step in and help by lathering up the squirrel with butter to set it free. But still, the squirrel remained stuck.

The incident resulted in a hilarious photograph of the animal gazing off into the distance, the spread smeared on and around its head.

The rescue league described the animal as “buttery and ashamed.”

According to a statement from the rescue group, the squirrel was eventually freed when rescue technician Bill Tanguay jumped into the dumpster and pulled gently on the squirrel, little by little.

“The squirrel was feisty and suffered some minor abrasions, but was otherwise fine,” officials said.

The squirrel was taken to the New England Wildlife Center, a science education organization and wildlife hospital and is expected to survive the ordeal — though the Internet shaming might hurt a little bit.

The rescue league offered this advice to those who encounter a similar situation in the future: “It is not recommended to try and free an animal on your own, as once that animal gets free it could bite and with the risk of rabies, you don’t want to get bitten by a wild animal.”

And definitely don’t waste your butter.

Washington: Police identify man - Vatentin Patricio - who threw newborn Chihuahua puppies into dumpster to die

WASHINGTON -- Pasco police now share the name and photo of the man who dumped three newborn Chihuahuas in a car wash trash bin about a week ago.

The animal shelter and police used surveillance video to identify the man as 33 year old Vatentin Patricio from Kennewick.

Officers tell Action News they've cited him with three counts of animal cruelty.

The shelter also says they're going to request the prosecutors to up the charges to a felony.

Officials haven't set a court date yet but police say the man isn't in custody.

The shelter says the suspect had to bring the mom and the one other puppy they still had.

The two will be held at the animal shelter until his court case.

Nebraska: Woman starved her Cocker Spaniel and Pit Bull to death then dumped their bodies into the trash

NEBRASKA -- A North Platte woman was cited with six counts of animal cruelty after dead dogs were found in a garbage can on Tuesday.

City Sanitation Department workers reported that there were dog carcasses in a dumpster in the alley behind a residence in the 1300 block of North Franklin Avenue.

An animal control officer investigated and found two dead dogs: a red pit bull cross with a pink collar and a chocolate cocker spaniel with a green collar.

“Both dogs had severely matted hair, sores and were severely malnourished,” said Investigator John Deal, of the North Platte Police Department.

Neighbors told police they believed the dogs belonged to a woman who lives at the residence. Witnesses also said that she had more than four dogs.

According to city ordinance, it’s unlawful for a person to keep more than four dogs or cats, or any combination, for longer than 90 days, unless the residence is a licensed commercial animal establishment or the individual is approved for a permit allowing them to keep more than four animals.

An officer was also called to the residence on Sunday, after a report that a dog had jumped the backyard fence. The dog’s leash got caught on the fence and the dog was hanging from the fence.

When the officer arrived, the dog had broken free and was unharmed. The woman was contacted about the complaint.

City ordinance requires that owners provide adequate care, control, food, health care, shelter and water to their animals.

In an interview last month, Deal said officers are often called to homes where dogs have been left in back yards. During those calls, officers check to see if the dog has food, water and proper shelter.

The officer checking on the dog didn’t seen any signs that indicated abuse, so no further action was taken, Deal said.

After the carcasses were discovered, officers obtained a search warrant for the home and found four kennels, three with dogs inside. One dog had escaped a kennel and was roaming free.

“The kennels were unkempt, did not contain food or water, and several had large amounts of feces in them,” Deal said.

The dogs had matted hair and appeared to be malnourished. Officers reported that the home smelled strongly of animal urine and feces.

All four of the animals were seized and taken to the vet for care, Deal said.

The woman was cited with six counts of animal cruelty, each a Class I Misdemeanor.

Deal said officials are seeking information about the ownership and treatment of the dead dogs. Anyone with information can call the police department or the animal control division at 308-535-6789.

Why isn't her name being released???

Maryland: Donald Yearwood, 21, is accused of kicking and stomping four puppies and then throwing them down a flight of stairs before tossing their tiny bodies into a dumpster.

MARYLAND -- A Baltimore man has been charged with animal cruelty after police said he killed four puppies and threw them in the trash.

Donald Yearwood, 21, is charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty and animal abuse, according to Baltimore Police.

Baltimore Police said they were called to Yearwood's home in the 3700 block of 10th Street in Brooklyn on Nov. 9 after people said they saw him kill four puppies.

Police couldn't find Yearwood or the puppies, but police officers and animal control officers were called back a few hours later when children found the puppies in a Dumpster.

About two-and-a-half weeks earlier, animal control officers had seized a female pit bull and six puppies from the home after a child was bitten by the female dog. The officers didn't realize that there were still four more puppies in the home.

The surviving siblings of the dead puppies

During the investigation, detectives learned that Donald Yearwood attempted to feed and care for the four remaining puppies over the next two weeks (why didn't he just call animal control to come and get them to reunite them with their mother???).

According to witnesses, on November 9, 2016, Yearwood was inside the home attempting to sleep. The puppies were making noise and that is when Yearwood began to kick and stomp on the puppies. The witnesses told investigators that Yearwood then threw the puppies down a flight of stairs.

During this incident, there were several young children in the room who witnessed the attack. Yearwood then put the puppies in a box and left the location.

A surveillance video showed Yearwood tossing the puppies in the Dumpster -- one of the poor puppies was still alive at this point, but mortally injured and in horrific pain. It was still alive when it was rescued and rushed to the vet clinic, but it died of its injuries. The other three puppies were already dead by the time authorities found their tiny, broken and crushed bodies.

Police issued a warrant for Yearwood, who turned himself in at the Southern District Police Station on Wednesday night. Yearwood was taken to Central Booking and could not be reached for comment.

Michigan: Westland Animal Control worker fired after dumping dog's body in dumpster

MICHIGAN -- Westland resident, Melissa Wise, thought it was odd when she noticed a Westland Animal Control truck pulled up next to a dumpster at an old firehouse on Palmer.

“That’s when we heard a loud thump,” Wise said. “And you’re wondering, what did Animal Control just put in the dumpster?”

When Wise opened the lid of the dumpster, she was horrified to find the body of a dog laying on top of a pile of garbage.

“I was disgusted,” she said.

Turns out, the Animal Control worker dumped the body of a pit bull named Nina, which had recently been reported missing by her owner.

Nina ran away from home, and was later found dead on the side of the road after she was apparently hit by a car.

Wise couldn't believe Animal Control would treat someone's pet with so much disrespect, so she took the complaint to city leaders.

After some phone calls were made, they made Animal control return and pick up the dog. If I were the 2nd officer, I would have been sure to say, "I didn't have anything to do with this!"

When confronted, the Animal Control worker said there was nothing he could do about the dog, that’s why he dumped the dog's body in the dumpster.

“I had to go pick up this other guy’s dying dog. There was nothing I could do,” said the worker.

The city, on the other hand, wasn’t buying that excuse and fired the worker and suspended the fire marshal and his supervisor without pay for five days.

The mayor told Local 4 that the incident should have never happened, and released this statement regarding the incident:

"Like you, I was shocked and appalled to see the photographs of a Westland employee throwing the body of a deceased dog into a Dumpster. After an investigation into the incident, the City of Westland has terminated the animal control officer in question, and his supervisor has received a five day, unpaid suspension.

"On behalf of the City of Westland, I want to apologize. This should not have happened. This animal was someone's pet and deserves respect and compassion just like you and I would want and expect for our pets.

The City of Westland is in the process of reviewing all of our policies and procedures with regards to Ordinance and Animal Control under a recent reorganization I announced a few weeks ago.

As a Compassionate City, our city values all lives, both human and animal. As animal lovers and dog owners ourselves, my wife Sherri and I wish to donate a proper burial of this beloved pet to his human family to help them say goodbye."

FACEBOOK POSTS:
For some reason, trolls came out in droves about this story. Several complained that it was "just a dog" and who cares if it's dumped in the trash? Clearly, they don't understand that animal control officers typically have a protocol in which the animal is brought to the shelter to be scanned for a microchip and they try to find the owner. Sometimes owners of lost pets will come in and fill out forms and post photos of their missing pet. Others complained b/c the dead dog's owner supposedly didn't want his dog's photo on the internet.

I didn't see any specific posts where the dog's owner was asking for the photos to be removed, but even if he had.... Um, well sorry but your dog got loose, got hit and killed by a car and its body thrown into a dumpster. You have no control in demanding that she remove the photos any more than demanding that the news channel ClickOnDetroit (or me) remove the photos because "you're upset". You were able to get your dog's body back to bury it and were able to stop searching for your poor dog - thanks to this woman. You should be thanking her instead of sending your trolls after her.

Also, this unstable woman named Brandy R Miller (aka Bree Miller) took it upon herself to troll several people repeatedly and threaten to contact the Good Samaritan's boss. Why? Because it's Monday, the sky is blue, it's her "time of the month". Who knows? What I do know is that she needs therapy. Now.

Brandy R Miller Who the fuck posted this?! You should be Ashamed of yourself!!! I understand the fing cause but this isn't YOUR dog or YOUR family member!! The owner asked for you to take it down TAKE IT DOWN

Brandy R Miller: TAKE THIS FUCKING POST DOWN NOW!!!!!

Casey Soave Katelyn Buchte: take it off please

Gayle M. Olson Hughes: Did you read the entire post because the owner is in it and its the only way he found his dog.

Brandy R Miller: Yeah I read the entire fucking post. He said he knew and he wanted it removed. Then you have ignorant fucking people making it viral...

Manda Johnson: No YOURE ignorant.

Brandy R Miller: I'm going to report her to her employer.. A vet tech that ignores an owners requests for this to be private

April Wright: I don't understand why she thinks her outrage is worth more than

Brandy R Miller: She has no right. I'll be calling her employer! She does not have the right to post another dog owners loss on fb after him asking for her to remove the video because it was upsetting him

Mandy Stromski: Yeah but it's not as if she'll lose her job over it. Social Media has given everyone the right to put anything they want out into the public. Just like you're putting your opinion out there right now and the other 1600 opinions on this post. The owner and all of the other do also have the right to report this post and facebook will take care of it.

Brandy R Miller: The owner reported her first lol

Manda Johnson: Clearly 90% of these people would like their dogs thrown in the trash. Hope your dogs never go missing. If it weren't for this post people wouldn't know what happens to these poor babies when no one is watching.

Brandy R Miller: If my dog was hit by a car... I would NOT want to see his remains blasted all over fucking fb I'll tell you that! The dog was already dead!

(Augst 2016) Canada: Man and woman let their dog die of heat exhaustion then dump its body into a dumpster before driving off

CANADA -- The BC SPCA is asking for the public’s help in solving the case of a dog found dead in a Coquitlam dumpster on July 26th.

Spokesperson Lorie Chortyk says the dog died of extreme heat exposure.

“It is suspicious to us based on the cause of death.”

Senior Animal Protection Officer Eileen Drever says it was a very painful death.

Security video taken at 68 Schooner Street in Coquitlam shows a light-colored mini-van pulling up behind the building and two individuals throwing the dead dog into the dumpster.

Drever notes the dog was wearing a distinctive blue and grey collar and a red and black leash that someone may recognize.

The local worker who found the dog hopes those responsible will be held to account.

It was a typical morning for Ernie Wedgewood, a service tech with Howard Marten Fluid Technologies, until he went to empty the dumpsters.

“Just emptied the dumpsters and stuff and get ready for the ready, and I went and looked in the garbage, and there was a dead dog in there. I think the dog was left in a car and died of heat exhaustion, that’s just my opinion.”

If you can help, you’re asked to call the BC SPCA’s animal cruelty hotline at 1-855-622-7722.

The BC SPCA says its received 1000 calls since May 1 to respond to animals left in hot vehicles.

Pennsylvania: Restaurant owner Shi Eng, 54, busted AGAIN "dumpster diving" for deer brains, spinal columns, legs; believe she used them in the restaurant's meals

PENNSYLVANIA -- Workers at an Elizabethtown deer processor thought they had a raccoon problem in their dumpsters, after hearing noises and finding deer parts strewn on the ground.

They went out to investigate, and when they opened the dumpster were shocked to find a woman inside gathering deer parts, said Greg Graham, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife conservation officer.

After a six-month investigation, Shi Eng, 54, of Lititz, was issued 16 citations for illegally buying or selling game, and her husband, Chun Eng, 66, received one citation for the same offense.

The investigation began in December 2015 after the Pa. Game Commission was contacted by New York officials who accused Shi Eng of selling deer parts out of her vehicle in Chinatown in New York City.

The couple was known to two deer processors in Lancaster county, Graham said.

The day before the 2015 incident at the Elizabethtown deer processor, Shi Eng was at the business asking for deer parts for her dog. "They said 'go ahead, help yourself,' " Graham said.

The next day, she was back, Graham said. "It was Mrs. Eng inside the dumpster – dumpster diving, so to speak," Graham said.

The Engs were also accused in three other incidents between 2013 and 2015 at a New Holland deer processor, Graham said.

In 2013, the woman came to the shop asking for bones for her dog, and the owner picked out a few to give her. "The next day she was helping herself," he said, out of the dumpster behind the shop.

"The manager asked 'How many dogs do you have?' and the answer was 'Many dogs'," Graham said. He said the manager told her to take what she had, but to stay out of the dumpster.

In 2014, workers found her back at the dumpster again, Graham said. "She offered to pay for parts," he said, but the employees said they can't sell them, and they told her to leave.

In another instance in 2015, a neighbor saw Chun Eng at the dumpster, Graham said.

After learning of the New York charges, Graham said he went to New China House restaurant in Lititz Dec. 16, and said he found 300 to 400 pounds of deer parts - Deer brains, heads, parts.

"It was primarily legs, heads, rib cages, spinal columns, a bowl of deer brains," Graham said.

An hour later, he Department of Agriculture was at the restaurant, and shut it down after finding numerous violations.

They were up and running a few days later, Graham said. The business was later sold, and is now open under new owners, he said.

The Engs "never admitted to anything," Graham said. He said Shi Eng did plead guilty to some of the charges in New York, which were primarily unlawful possession and importation of deer from a state where there is chronic wasting disease in deer.

A woman who worked at the restaurant told officials she had asked the Engs what the deer legs in the freezer were for. "She said it makes the soup taste better," Graham said the woman was told.

Last December, Chun Eng told PennLive "We don't sell deer meat."

"They took the deer bones – we need for soup for my wife, and for me," he said, adding that they don't sell it to the public. He said they got the deer heads and bones from a deer butchering house in Elizabethtown.

Graham said he's skeptical that deer parts never made their way into food in the restaurant.

"I think it's pretty hard to believe that some of those products that they had in the refrigerator and freezer were not ending up somehow, in some way, shape or form, in one of the dishes," he said.

"You got a restaurant, you got a freezer and cooler, and half of what's there are venison parts, I think that goes against claiming this is all for personal use," he said.

The charges against them, filed Friday, are the highest grade of summary infractions allowed under Game Commission statutes, Graham said. Up to 90 days in jail and fines up to $1,500 are possible if found guilty.

Chun Eng pleaded guilty to Department of Agriculture restaurant violations and paid $1,200 in fines.

Oregon: Dumpster Puppies Covered in Fleas and Waste Rescued by Animal Control

OREGON -- The Eureka Police Department rescued a litter of puppies abandoned by the McDonald’s dumpster near the Bayshore Mall on Saturday.

Eureka Animal Control Officer Celeste Villarreal told the Outpost that three 5 - to 7-week-old puppies were found in poor condition in a box near the dumpster.

“They were covered in fleas and waste,” Villarreal said. “The puppies were found in a plastic container with white synthetic cloth in the bottom. The cloth was saturated with feces and urine. There was also quite a bit of liquid in the bottom of the container. They had no food, no water and were in direct sunlight on a warm day.”

Villarreal took the puppies home and cared for them until they could be taken to the Humboldt County Animal Shelter on Monday.

The three pups are likely from the same littler, but appear to be of varying breeds. One is a black-and-tan Rottweiler mix, another is a sable German shepherd mix, and another is a black-and-white pit bull-terrier mix.

Although the puppies appear to have different breed distinctions, Villarreal said they are very likely from the same litter because female dog can be impregnated by multiple males at the same time.

“They way dog biology works is they ovulate for several weeks, so they can be impregnated by multiple males,” Villarreal said. “So they’ll all be born at the same time but they’ll share different fathers.”

The pups are reported to be in good condition, and should be up for adoption as soon as they are old enough.

Florida: Authorities searching for person who left Shih Tzu in a bucket to die

FLORIDA -- Jingles, a 10-year-old dog who was found in really bad shape inside a dumpster, has proven himself to be a survivor.

After being found, the Shih Tzu is getting help to get back in good health, and hopefully he can get adopted soon.

Jingles looked like one big blob of matted fur when found

"He needs to be socialized. He hasn't been kept up," Dr. Sharon McIvor of  Dadeland Animal Hospital  said.

The day he was found, Jingles was thin, weak and in need of medical care.

"I didn't think he was going to make it in the beginning, but I do have hope now. He shows signs that he really wants to live," said Denice Zager, of Fur Angels Rescue said.

Zager, a foster caregiver, picked up Jingles last week, after finding him IN A BUCKET set out with the trash.

"He was in very, very bad condition," Zager said. "He had mats so bad you couldn't see his eyes. He smelled like death."

Jingles was found with a severe heartworm issue, a broken jaw, no teeth and a corneal ulcer in each eye.

"His heart is enlarged," McIvor said, adding that Jingles' condition suggests he lived in an abusive home. "When they shaved him off,  he was all skin and bone."

McIvor said that with the right care Jingles still has hope.

"With proper care and guidance, he should recover fully and be placed with a family without children," she said.

Jingles is currently in quarantine at Dadeland Animal Hospital, and he's not alone.

Fur Angels Rescue said there have been more than 20 cases of severe animal neglect in Miami-Dade County this year. The most common reason is the cost associated with owning a pet.

"Pet ownership is not an emotional thing. They're not an accessory," McIvor said. "It's a commitment"

McIvor thinks the cost of Jingle's recovery will be between $500 to $1,500, but Dadeland Animal Hospital is offering half off that treatment price to his next lucky owner.

Arkansas: Charles Dugan, 20, arrested, charged with beating dog to death with a dumbbell

ARKANSAS -- Police arrested a man in Arkansas Wednesday after receiving reports that he had killed a dog with a dumbbell and left its body in a dumpster.

20-year-old Charles James Dugan was being held at the Benton County Jail on suspicion of felony aggravated cruelty to animals, according to jail records.

Lowell police were notified about the incident by a woman who had heard about Dugan killing the dog and dumping the animal, bloody clothes and carpet in a dumpster on McClure Avenue, the arrest report states. The dumpster is located in a trailer park.

Officers first found a bloody pillow, piece of carpet and ball cap in the dumpster, then after digging further they found the dog wrapped in an orange sheet along with a white button-up shirt.

The officers did not find Dugan at the address they were given and found out from neighbors that he had a new address at an apartment complex in Fayetteville, according to the report. One neighbor also brought up the dog and pointed officers to another witness.

That witness told officers he went to talk to Dugan about the dog after hearing he had killed it with a dumbbell. The witness said he talked to Dugan - who was rocking in a chair with a knife in his hand - about the incident and was told that the dog was put down in the back bedroom, according to the report.

The witness told officers he saw a blood trail and hair and a large amount of blood in the room.

Officers were told Dugan had the dog for about nine months and the animal had belonged to a friend who had passed away, according to the report.

After executing a search warrant, police found a 30-pound dumbbell in the bedroom and blood splatter on the ceiling and walls, the report states. They also found the area where a piece of carpet had been removed.

Jail records show Dugan's bond has not yet been set.

A map shows the Lowell Animal Shelter is about a four minute walk from where the dog was killed.
